Weakly Inhomogeneous models for the Low-Redshift Universe

We analyze two different algorithms for constructing weakly inhomogeneous models for the low-redshift Universe, in order to provide a tool for testing the geodesic dynamics, within the sphere of validity for the Universe acceleration. We first implement the so-called quasi-isotropic solution in the late Universe, when a pure dark energy equation of state for the cosmological perfect fluid is considered. We demonstrate, that a solution exists only if the physical scale of the inhomogeneities is larger then the Hubble scale of the microphysics, which implies that inhomogeneities could not be observed at present-stage time. Then, we analyze a weakly deformed isotropic Universe toward a spherically symmetric model, thought as the natural metric framework of the {\Lambda}CDM model. We find that inhomogeneities will arise in the previous context as small perturbations of the order of few point percent over the background FRW universe. The obtained picture offers a useful scenario to investigate the influence of the inhomogeneity spectrum (left free in the obtained solution), on the propagation of photons or gravitational waves at low redshift values, and in line of principle may be used to account for several present-stage cosmological problems, such as the Hubble Tension.

Parker's Stellar Wind Model for Polytropic Gas Flows

Parker's hydrodynamic stellar wind model is extended to polytropic gas flows. A compatible theoretical formulation is given and detailed numerical and systematic asymptotic theoretical considerations are presented. The polytropic conditions are shown to lead to tenuous and faster wind flows and hence enable the stars to lose their angular momentum more quickly.

The Formation of Ultra-Diffuse Galaxies in the RomulusC Galaxy Cluster Simulation

We study the origins of 122 ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in the {\sc RomulusC} zoom-in cosmological simulation of a galaxy cluster (M$_{200} = 1.15\times10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$), one of the only such simulations capable of resolving the evolution and structure of dwarf galaxies (M$_{\star} < 10^9$ M$_{\odot}$). We find broad agreement with observed cluster UDGs and predict that they are not separate from the overall cluster dwarf population. UDGs in cluster environments form primarily from dwarf galaxies that experienced early cluster in-fall and subsequent quenching due to ram pressure. The ensuing dimming of these dwarf galaxies due to passive stellar evolution results in a population of very low surface brightness galaxies that are otherwise typical dwarfs. UDGs and non-UDGs alike are affected by tidal interactions with the cluster potential. Tidal stripping of dark matter, as well as mass loss from stellar evolution, results in the adiabatic expansion of stars, particularly in the lowest mass dwarfs. High mass dwarf galaxies show signatures of tidal heating while low mass dwarfs that survive until $z=0$ typically have not experienced such impulsive interactions. There is little difference between UDGs and non-UDGs in terms of their dark matter halos, stellar morphology, colors, and location within the cluster. In most respects cluster UDG and non-UDGs alike are similar to isolated dwarf galaxies, except for the fact that they are typically quenched.

Is there a spectral turnover in the spin noise of millisecond pulsars?

Pulsar timing arrays provide a unique means to detect nanohertz gravitational waves through long-term measurements of pulse arrival times from an ensemble of millisecond pulsars. After years of observations, some timing array pulsars have been shown to be dominated by low-frequency red noise, including spin noise that might be associated with pulsar rotational irregularities. The power spectral density of pulsar timing red noise is usually modeled with a power law or a power law with a turnover frequency below which the noise power spectrum plateaus. If there is a turnover in the spin noise of millisecond pulsars, residing within the observation band of current and/or future pulsar timing measurements, it may be easier than projected to resolve the gravitational-wave background from supermassive binary black holes. Additionally, the spectral turnover can provide valuable insights on neutron star physics. In the recent study by Melatos and Link, the authors provided a derivation of the model for power spectral density of spin noise from superfluid turbulence in the core of a neutron star, from first principles. The model features a spectral turnover, which depends on the dynamical response time of the superfluid and the steady-state angular velocity lag between the crust and the core of the star. In this work, we search for a spectral turnover in spin noise using the first data release of the International Pulsar Timing Array. Through Bayesian model selection, we find no evidence of a spectral turnover. Our analysis also shows that data from pulsars J1939+2134, J1024$-$0719 and J1713+0747 prefers the power-law model to the superfluid turbulence model.

Behaviour of the MgII 2798AA Line Over the Full Range of AGN Variability

We investigate the responsiveness of the 2798AA Mg II broad emission line in AGN on timescales of several years. Our study is based on a sample of extremely variable AGN as well as a broad population sample. The observed response of the line in previous studies has been mixed. By focussing on extreme variability ($|\Delta g|>$ 1) we find that Mg II clearly does respond to the continuum. However, the degree of responsiveness varies strikingly from one object to another; we see cases of Mg II changing by as much as the continuum, more than the continuum, or very little at all. In 74% of the highly variable sample the behaviour of Mg II corresponds with that of H$\beta$, with 30% of the objects showing large variations in both lines. We do not detect any change in the line width that would correspond to Broad Line Region `breathing', in accordance with results from literature. Some of the objects in our highly variable sample show a clear asymmetry in the Mg II profile. This skewness can be both to the blue and the red of the line centre. Results from our broad population sample show that highly variable quasars have lower Eddington ratios. This result holds for the variability of the continuum, but the correlation is significantly reduced for the variability of the Mg II line. For the first time, we present an overview of the value of the intrinsic Baldwin Effect for Mg II in a large sample.

Tracing the co-evolution path of super massive black holes and spheroids with AKARI-selected ultra-luminous IR galaxies at intermediate redshifts

We present the stellar population and ionized-gas outflow properties of ultra-luminous IR galaxies (ULIRGs) at $z=$ 0.1-1.0, which are selected from AKARI FIR all-sky survey. We construct a catalog of 1077 ULIRGs to examine feedback effect after major mergers. 202 out of the 1077 ULIRGs are spectroscopically identified by SDSS and Subaru/FOCAS observations. Thanks to deeper depth and higher resolution of AKARI compared to the previous IRAS survey, and reliable identification from WISE MIR pointing, the sample is unique in identifying optically-faint (i$\sim$20) IR-bright galaxies, which could be missed in previous surveys. A self-consistent spectrum-SED decomposition method, which constrains stellar population properties in SED modeling based on spectral fitting results, has been employed for 149 ULIRGs whose optical continua are dominated by host galaxies. They are massive galaxies ($M_{\rm star}\sim10^{11}$-$10^{12}$ M$_{\odot}$), associated with intense star formation activities (SFR $\sim$ 200-2000 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$). The sample covers a range of AGN bolometric luminosity of $10^{10}$-$10^{13}$ L$_{\odot}$, and the outflow velocity measured from [OIII] 5007A line shows a correlation with AGN luminosity. Eight galaxies show extremely fast outflows with velocity up to 1500-2000 km s$^{-1}$. However, the co-existence of vigorous starbursts and strong outflows suggests the star formation has not been quenched during the ULIRG phase. By deriving stellar mass and mass fraction of young stellar population, we find no significant discrepancies between stellar properties of ULIRGs with weak and powerful AGNs. The results are not consistent with the merger-induced evolutionary scenario, which predicts that SF-dominated ULIRGs show smaller stellar mass and younger stellar populations compared to AGN-dominated ULIRGs.

Scalar induced resonant sterile neutrino production in the early Universe

It has been recently suggested \cite{Bezrukov:2017ike,Bezrukov:2018wvd} that a cosmic scalar field can completely change the keV-scale sterile neutrino production in the early Universe. Its effect may, for various parameter choices, either suppress sterile neutrino production and make moderate active-sterile mixing cosmologically acceptable, or increase the production and generate considerable dark matter component out of sterile neutrino with otherwise negligible mixing with SM. In this paper we provide analytic estimates complementing and providing details of the numerical calculations performed in \cite{Bezrukov:2018wvd} in the case of resonant amplification of the sterile neutrino production. We also discuss phenomenological and theoretical issues related to the successful implementation of this idea in fully realistic extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics.

Sausage & Mash: The dual origin of the Galactic thick disc and halo from the gas-rich Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage merger

We analyse a set of cosmological magneto-hydrodynamic simulations of the formation of Milky Way-mass galaxies identified to have a prominent radially anisotropic stellar halo component similar to the so-called "Gaia Sausage" found in the Gaia data. We examine the effects of the progenitor of the Sausage (the Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage, GES) on the formation of major galactic components analogous to the Galactic thick disc and inner stellar halo. We find that the GES merger is likely to have been gas-rich and contribute 10-50$\%$ of gas to a merger-induced centrally concentrated starburst that results in the rapid formation of a compact, rotationally supported thick disc that occupies the typical chemical thick disc region of chemical abundance space. We find evidence that gas-rich mergers heated the proto-disc of the Galaxy, scattering stars onto less-circular orbits such that their rotation velocity and metallicity positively correlate, thus contributing an additional component that connects the Galactic thick disc to the inner stellar halo. We demonstrate that the level of kinematic heating of the proto-galaxy correlates with the kinematic state of the population before the merger, the progenitor mass and orbital eccentricity of the merger. Furthermore, we show that the mass and time of the merger can be accurately inferred from local stars on counter-rotating orbits.

CMB and BBN constraints on evaporating primordial black holes revisited

We derive new CMB anisotropy power spectrum and BBN constraints for evaporating primordial black holes by explicitly solving the electromagnetic particle cascades of emitted particles and the deposition of this emitted energy to the background baryon-photon plasma. We show that the CMB anisotropies can provide stronger constraints compared to BBN and CMB spectral distortions on black holes with masses as small as $M_{\rm BH}=1.1\times 10^{13}$g, a slightly smaller mass than what has been considered in literature until now. We also show that, with more up-to-date data on abundances of deuterium and helium-3, BBN constraints are strengthened significantly.

Detecting and Characterizing Young Quasars I: Systemic Redshifts and Proximity Zones Measurements

In a multi-wavelength survey of $13$ quasars at $5.8\lesssim z\lesssim6.5$, that were pre-selected to be potentially young, we find five objects with extremely small proximity zone sizes that may imply UV-luminous quasar lifetimes of $\lesssim 100,000$ years. Proximity zones are regions of enhanced transmitted flux in the vicinity of the quasars that are sensitive to the quasars' lifetimes because the intergalactic gas has a finite response time to their radiation. We combine sub-mm observations from the Atacama Large Millimetre Array (ALMA) and the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA), as well as deep optical and near-infrared spectra from medium-resolution spectrograph on the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and on the Keck telescopes, in order to identify and characterize these new young quasars, which provide valuable clues about the accretion behavior of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in the early universe, and pose challenges on current black hole formation models to explain the rapid formation of billion solar mass black holes. We measure the quasars' systemic redshifts, black hole masses, Eddington ratios, emission line luminosities, and star formation rates of their host galaxies. Combined with previous results we estimate the fraction of young objects within the high-redshift quasar population at large to be $5\%\lesssim f_{\rm young}\lesssim 10\%$. One of the young objects, PSO J158-14, shows a very bright dust continuum flux ($F_{\rm cont}=3.46\pm 0.02\,\rm mJy$), indicating a highly star-bursting host galaxy with a star formation rate of approximately $1420\,M_{\odot}\,\rm yr^{-1}$.

Addressing $H_0$ tension with emergent dark radiation in unitary gravity

We propose a one-parameter extension to $\Lambda$CDM, expected to strongly affect cosmological tensions. An effective dark radiation component in the early universe redshifts away as hot dark matter, then quintessence, tracking the dominant equation-of-state parameter and leaving a falsifiable torsion field in the current epoch. This picture results from a new Poincar\'{e} gauge theory (PGT), one of the most promising among the latest batch of 58 PGTs found to be both power-counting renormalisable and free from ghosts and tachyons. We systematically categorise the cosmologies of 33 of these PGTs, as special cases of the most general parity-preserving, Ostrogradsky-stable PGT with a purely Yang-Mills action. The theory we consider contains two propagating massless gravitons, which may be $J^P=2^+$ (long-range gravitation and gravitational waves). A conspiracy among the coupling constants eliminates the spatial curvature $k\in\{\pm 1,0\}$ from the field equations. We show that this `$k$-screening' is not restricted to conformal gravity theories. The flat Friedmann equations are then emergent, with potentially tension-resolving freedom at the early scale-invariant epoch that reliably gives way to an attractor-like state of modern $\Lambda$CDM evolution. We compare with related theories and promising special cases, such as $k$-screened theories with negative-definite effective $k$, and more traditional theories with effective $\Lambda$ and a $J^P=0^-$ massive graviton (dark matter candidate). As a bonus, we analyse similarly constrained actions in the new extended Weyl gauge theory (eWGT). We show that in cosmology, PGT and eWGT span exactly the same classical phenomenology up to a linear map between their coupling constants, hinting at a deeper relationship between the two.

Fluctuation dynamo in a weakly collisional plasma

The turbulent amplification of cosmic magnetic fields depends upon the material properties of the host plasma. In many hot, dilute astrophysical systems, such as the intracluster medium (ICM) of galaxy clusters, the rarity of particle--particle collisions allows departures from local thermodynamic equilibrium. These departures exert anisotropic viscous stresses on the plasma motions that inhibit their ability to stretch magnetic-field lines. We present a numerical study of the fluctuation dynamo in a weakly collisional plasma using magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations endowed with a field-parallel viscous (Braginskii) stress. When the stress is limited to values consistent with a pressure anisotropy regulated by firehose and mirror instabilities, the Braginskii-MHD dynamo largely resembles its MHD counterpart. If instead the parallel viscous stress is left unabated -- a situation relevant to recent kinetic simulations of the fluctuation dynamo and to the early stages of the dynamo in a magnetized ICM -- the dynamo changes its character, amplifying the magnetic field while exhibiting many characteristics of the saturated state of the large-Prandtl-number (${\rm Pm}\gtrsim{1}$) MHD dynamo. We construct an analytic model for the Braginskii-MHD dynamo in this regime, which successfully matches magnetic-energy spectra. A prediction of this model, confirmed by our simulations, is that a Braginskii-MHD plasma without pressure-anisotropy limiters will not support a dynamo if the ratio of perpendicular and parallel viscosities is too small. This ratio reflects the relative allowed rates of field-line stretching and mixing, the latter of which promotes resistive dissipation of the magnetic field. In all cases that do exhibit a dynamo, the generated magnetic field is organized into folds that persist into the saturated state and bias the chaotic flow to acquire a scale-dependent spectral anisotropy.

Twinlike models for parametrized dark energy

We study cosmological models involving a single real scalar field that has an equation of state parameter which evolves with cosmic time. We highlight some common parametrizations for the equation of state as a function of redshift in the context of twinlike theories. The procedure is used to introduce different models that have the same acceleration parameter, with the very same energy densities and pressure in flat spacetime.

Constraints on primordial gravitational waves from the Cosmic Microwave Background

Searches for primordial gravitational waves have resulted in constraints in a large frequency range from a variety of sources. The standard Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) technique is to parameterise the tensor power spectrum in terms of the tensor-to-scalar ratio, $r$, and spectral index, $n_{\rm t}$, and constrain these using measurements of the temperature and polarization power spectra. Another method, applicable to modes well inside the cosmological horizon at recombination, uses the shortwave approximation, under which gravitational waves behave as an effective neutrino species. In this paper we give model-independent CMB constraints on the energy density of gravitational waves, $\Omega_\textrm{gw} h^2$, for the entire range of observable frequencies. On large scales, $f \lesssim 10^{-16}\, \text{Hz}$, we reconstruct the initial tensor power spectrum in logarithmic frequency bins, finding maximal sensitivity for scales close to the horizon size at recombination. On small scales, $f \gtrsim10^{-15}\,\mbox{Hz}$, we use the shortwave approximation, finding $\Omega_\textrm{gw} h^2 < 1.7 \times10^{-6}$ for adiabatic initial conditions and $\Omega_\textrm{gw} h^2 < 2.9 \times10^{-7}$ for homogeneous initial conditions (both $2\sigma$ upper limits). For scales close to the horizon size at recombination, we use second-order perturbation theory to calculate the back-reaction from gravitational waves, finding $\Omega_\textrm{gw} h^2 < 8.4 \times10^{-7}$, in the absence of neutrino anisotropic stress and $\Omega_\textrm{gw} h^2 < 8.6 \times10^{-7}$ when including neutrino anisotropic stress. These constraints are valid for $ 10^{-15}\, \text{Hz} \gtrsim f \gtrsim 3 \times 10^{-16}\, \text{Hz}$.

Combined analysis of Planck and SPTPol data favors the early dark energy models

We study the implications of the Planck temperature power spectrum at low multipoles, $\ell<1000$, and SPTPol data. We show that this combination predicts consistent lensing-induced smoothing of acoustic peaks within $\Lambda$CDM cosmology and yields the robust predictions of the cosmological parameters. Combining only the Planck large-scale temperature data and the SPTPol polarization and lensing measurements within $\Lambda$CDM model we found substantially lower values of linear matter density perturbation $\sigma_8$ which bring the late-time parameter $S_8=\sigma_8\sqrt{\Omega_m/0.3}=0.763\pm0.022$ into accordance with galaxy clustering and weak lensing measurements. It also raises up the Hubble constant $H_0=69.68\pm1.00{\rm \,\,km\,s^{-1}Mpc^{-1}}$ that reduces the Hubble tension to the $2.5\sigma$ level. We examine the residual tension in the Early Dark Energy (EDE) model which produces the brief energy injection prior to recombination. We implement both the background and perturbation evolutions of the scalar field which potential scales as $V(\phi)\propto \phi^{2n}$. Including cosmic shear measurements (KiDS, VIKING-450, DES) and local distance-ladder data (SH0ES) to the combined fit we found that EDE completely alleviates the Hubble tension while not degradating the fit to large-scale structure data. The EDE scenario significantly improves the goodness-of-fit by $2.9\sigma$ in comparison with the concordance $\Lambda$CDM model. The account for the intermediate-redshift data (the supernova dataset and baryon acoustic oscillation data) fits perfectly to our parameter predictions and indicates the preference of EDE over $\Lambda$CDM at $3\sigma$.

Multiple-Scales Approach to The Averaging Problem in Cosmology

The Universe is homogeneous and isotropic on large scales, so on those scales it is usually modelled as a Friedmann-Lema\^{i}tre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) space-time. The non-linearity of the Einstein field equations raises concern over averaging over small-scale deviations form homogeneity and isotropy, with possible implications on the applicability of the FLRW metric to the Universe, even on large scales. Here I present a technique, based on the multiple-scales method of singular perturbation theory, to handle the small-scale inhomogeneities consistently. I obtain a leading order effective Einstein equation for the large-scale space-time metric, which contains a back-reaction term. The derivation of this equation is done in harmonic gauge, and conversion to other gauges is discussed. I estimate the magnitude of the back-reaction term relative to the critical density of the Universe in the example of an NFW halo, and find it to be of the order of a few percent. In this example, the back-reaction term is interpreted as a contribution of the energy-density of gravitational potential energy, averaged over the small-scale, to the total energy-momentum tensor.

Running vacuum in quantum field theory in curved spacetime: renormalizing $\rho_{vac}$ without $\sim m^4$ terms

The $\Lambda$-term in Einstein's equations is a fundamental building block of the `concordance' $\Lambda$CDM model of cosmology. Even though the model is not free of fundamental problems, they have not been circumvented by any alternative dark energy proposal either. Here we stick to the $\Lambda$-term, but we contend that it can be a `running quantity' in quantum field theory (QFT) in curved spacetime. A plethora of phenomenological works have shown that this option can be highly competitive with the $\Lambda$CDM with a rigid cosmological term. The, so-called, `running vacuum models' (RVM's) are characterized by the vacuum energy density, $\rho_{vac}$, being a series of (even) powers of the Hubble parameter and its time derivatives. Such theoretical form has been motivated by general renormalization group arguments, which look plausible. Here we dwell further upon the origin of the RVM structure within QFT in FLRW spacetime. We compute the renormalized energy-momentum tensor with the help of the adiabatic regularization procedure and find that it leads essentially to the RVM form. This means that $\rho_{vac}(H)$ evolves as a constant term plus dynamical components ${\cal O}(H^2)$ and ${\cal O}(H^4)$, the latter being relevant for the early universe only. However, the renormalized $\rho_{vac}(H)$ does not carry dangerous terms proportional to the quartic power of the masses ($\sim m^4$) of the fields, these terms being a well-known source of exceedingly large contributions. At present, $\rho_{vac}(H)$ is dominated by the additive constant term accompanied by a mild dynamical component $\sim \nu H^2$ ($|\nu|\ll1$), which mimics quintessence.

21cm forest probes on the axion dark matter in the post-inflationary Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking scenarios

We study the future prospects of the 21cm forest observations on the axion-like dark matter when the spontaneous breaking of the global Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry occurs after the inflation. The large isocurvature perturbations of order unity sourced from axion-like particles can result in the enhancement of minihalo formation, and the subsequent hierarchical structure formation can affect the minihalo abundance whose masses can exceed ${\cal O}(10^4) M_{\odot}$ relevant for the 21cm forest observations. We show that the 21cm forest observations are capable of probing the axion-like particle mass in the range $10^{-18}\lesssim m_a \lesssim 10^{-12}$ eV for the temperature independent axion mass. For the temperature dependent axion mass, the zero temperature axion mass scale for which the 21cm forest measurements can be affected is extended further to as big as of order $10^{-6}$ eV.

Measurement of the Background Activities of a 100Mo-enriched powder sample for AMoRE crystal material using a single high purity germanium detector

The Advanced Molybdenum-based Rare process Experiment (AMoRE) searches for neutrino-less double-beta (0{\nu}\b{eta}\b{eta}) decay of 100Mo in enriched molybdate crystals. The AMoRE crystals must have low levels of radioactive contamination to achieve low background signals with energies near the Q-value of the 100Mo 0{\nu}\b{eta}\b{eta} decay. To produce low-activity crystals, radioactive contaminants in the raw materials used to form the crystals must be controlled and quantified. 100EnrMoO3 powder, which is enriched in the 100Mo isotope, is of particular interest as it is the source of 100Mo in the crystals. A high-purity germanium detector having 100% relative efficiency, named CC1, is being operated in the Yangyang underground laboratory. Using CC1, we collected a gamma spectrum from a 1.6-kg 100EnrMoO3 powder sample enriched to 96.4% in 100Mo. Activities were analyzed for the isotopes 228Ac, 228Th, 226Ra, and 40K. They are long-lived naturally occurring isotopes that can produce background signals in the region of interest for AMoRE. Activities of both 228Ac and 228Th were < 1.0 mBq/kg at 90% confidence level (C.L.). The activity of 226Ra was measured to be 5.1 \pm 0.4 (stat) \pm 2.2 (syst) mBq/kg. The 40K activity was found as < 16.4 mBq/kg at 90% C.L.

Convection and Spin-Up During Common Envelope Evolution: The Formation of Short-Period Double White Dwarfs

The formation channels and predicted populations of double-white dwarfs (DWDs) are important because a subset will evolve to be gravitational-wave sources and/or progenitors of Type Ia supernovae. Given the observed population of short-period DWDs, we calculate the outcomes of common envelope evolution when convective effects are included. For each observed white dwarf in a DWD system, we identify all progenitor stars with an equivalent proto-WD core mass from a comprehensive suite of stellar evolution models. With the second observed white dwarf as the companion, we calculate the conditions under which convection can accommodate the energy released as the orbit decays, including (if necessary), how much the envelope must spin-up during the common envelope phase. The predicted post-CE final separations closely track the observed DWD orbital parameter space, further strengthening the view that convection is a key ingredient in common envelope evolution.

Primordial Black Hole Dark Matter and the LIGO/Virgo observations

The LIGO/Virgo collaboration have by now detected the mergers of ten black hole binaries via the emission of gravitational radiation. The hypothesis that these black holes have formed during the cosmic QCD epoch and make up all of the cosmic dark matter, has been rejected by many authors reasoning that, among other constraints, primordial black hole (PBH) dark matter would lead to orders of magnitude larger merger rates than observed. We revisit the calculation of the present PBH merger rate. Solar mass PBHs form clusters at fairly high redshifts, which evaporate at lower redshifts. We consider in detail the evolution of binary properties in such clusters due to three-body interactions between the two PBH binary members and a third by-passing PBH, for the first time, by full numerical integration. A Monte-Carlo analysis shows that formerly predicted merger rates are reduced by orders of magnitude due to such interactions. The natural prediction of PBH dark matter formed during the QCD epoch yields a pronounced peak around $1M_{\odot}$ with a small mass fraction of PBHs on a shoulder around $30M_{\odot}$, dictated by the well-determined equation of state during the QCD epoch. We employ this fact to make a tentative prediction of the merger rate of $\sim 30M_{\odot}$ PBH binaries, and find it very close to that determined by LIGO/Virgo. Furthermore we show that current LIGO/Virgo limits on the existence of $\sim M_{\odot}$ binaries do not exclude QCD PBHs to make up all of the cosmic dark matter. Neither do constraints on QCD PBHs from the stochastic gravitational background, pre-recombination accretion, or dwarf galaxies pose a problem. Microlensing constraints on QCD PBHs should be re-investigated. We caution, however, in this numerically challenging problem some possibly relevant effects could not be treated.

Hidden Photon Dark Matter in the Light of XENON1T and Stellar Cooling

The low-energy electronic recoil spectrum in XENON1T provides an intriguing hint for potential new physics. At the same time, observations of horizontal branch stars favor the existence of a small amount of extra cooling compared to the one expected from the Standard Model particle content. In this note, we argue that a hidden photon with a mass of $\sim 2.8$ keV and a kinetic mixing of $\sim 10^{-15}$ allows for a good fit to both of these excesses. In this scenario, the signal detected in XENON1T is due to the absorption of hidden photon dark matter particles, whereas the anomalous cooling of horizontal branch stars arises from resonant production of hidden photons in the stellar interior.

The XMM Cluster Survey: new evidence for the 3.5 keV feature in clusters is inconsistent with a dark matter origin

There have been several reports of a detection of an unexplained excess of X-ray emission at $\simeq$ 3.5 keV in astrophysical systems. One interpretation of this excess is the decay of sterile neutrino dark matter. The most influential study to date analysed 73 clusters observed by the XMM-Newton satellite. We explore evidence for a $\simeq$ 3.5 keV excess in the XMM-PN spectra of 117 redMaPPer galaxy clusters ($0.1 < z < 0.6$). In our analysis of individual spectra, we identify three systems with an excess of flux at $\simeq$ 3.5 keV. In one case (XCS J0003.3+0204) this excess may result from a discrete emission line. None of these systems are the most dark matter dominated in our sample. We group the remaining 114 clusters into four temperature ($T_{\rm X}$) bins to search for an increase in $\simeq$ 3.5 keV flux excess with $T_{\rm X}$ - a reliable tracer of halo mass. However, we do not find evidence of a significant excess in flux at $\simeq$ 3.5 keV in any $T_{\rm X}$ bins. To maximise sensitivity to a potentially weak dark matter decay feature at $\simeq$ 3.5 keV, we jointly fit 114 clusters. Again, no significant excess is found at $\simeq$ 3.5 keV. We estimate the upper limit of an undetected emission line at $\simeq$ 3.5 keV to be $2.41 \times 10^{-6}$ photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, corresponding to a mixing angle of $\sin^2(2\theta)=4.4 \times 10^{-11}$, lower than previous estimates from cluster studies. We conclude that a flux excess at $\simeq$ 3.5 keV is not a ubiquitous feature in clusters and therefore unlikely to originate from sterile neutrino dark matter decay.

Evidence for primordial black hole dark matter from LIGO/Virgo merger rates

The LIGO/Virgo collaboration has by now observed or constrained the gravitational merger rates of different classes of compact objects. We consider the possibility that the bulk of these mergers are primordial black hole (PBH) mergers of PBHs formed during the QCD epoch making up the entirety of the dark matter. Having shown in a companion paper that mergers due to the initial binary population formed in the early Universe are likely negligible, we compute current merger rates in PBH clusters in which the typical PBH resides. We consider two scenarios: (i) the PBH mass function dictated by the QCD equation of state and (ii) the PBH mass function dictated by the existence of a peak in the inflationary perturbation spectrum. In the first scenario, which is essentially parameter free, we reproduce very well the merger rates for heavy BHs, the merger rate of mass-asymmetric BHs such as GW190814, a recently discovered merger of a 23$M_{\odot}$ black hole with a $2.6M_{\odot}$ object, and can naturally explain why LIGO/Virgo has not yet observed mergers of two light PBHs from the dominant $\sim 1\,M_{\odot}$ PBH population. In the second scenario, which has some parameter freedom, we match well the observed rate of heavy PBHs, but can currently not explain the rate for mass-asymmetric events. In either case it is tantalizing that in both scenarios PBH merger rates made with a minimum of assumptions match most LIGO/Virgo observed rates very well.

Monte Carlo estimation of the probability of causal contacts between communicating civilisations

In this work we address the problem of estimating the probabilities of causal contacts between civilisations in the Galaxy. We make no assumptions regarding the origin and evolution of intelligent life. We simply assume a network of causally connected nodes. These nodes refer somehow to intelligent agents with the capacity of receiving and emitting electromagnetic signals. Here we present a three-parametric statistical Monte Carlo model of the network in a simplified sketch of the Galaxy. Our goal, using Monte Carlo simulations, is to explore the parameter space and analyse the probabilities of causal contacts. We find that the odds to make a contact over decades of monitoring are low for most models, except for those of a galaxy densely populated with long-standing civilisations. We also find that the probability of causal contacts increases with the lifetime of civilisations more significantly than with the number of active civilisations. We show that the maximum probability of making a contact occurs when a civilisation discovers the required communication technology.

Large Neutrino Magnetic Moments in the Light of Recent Experiments

The excess in electron recoil events reported recently by the XENON1T experiment may be interpreted as evidence for a sizable transition magnetic moment $\mu_{\nu_e\nu_\mu}$ of Majorana neutrinos. We show the consistency of this scenario when a single component transition magnetic moment takes values $\mu_{\nu_e\nu_\mu} \in(1.65 - 3.42) \times 10^{-11} \mu_B$. Such a large value typically leads to unacceptably large neutrino masses. In this paper we show that new leptonic symmetries can solve this problem and demonstrate this with several examples. We first revive and then propose a simplified model based on $SU(2)_H$ horizontal symmetry. Owing to the difference in their Lorentz structures, in the $SU(2)_H$ symmetric limit, $m_\nu$ vanishes while $\mu_{\nu_e\nu_\mu}$ is nonzero. Our simplified model is based on an approximate $SU(2)_H$, which we also generalize to a three family $SU(3)_H$-symmetry. Collider and low energy tests of these models are analyzed. We have also analyzed implications of the XENON1T data for the Zee model and its extensions which naturally generate a large $\mu_{\nu_e\nu_\mu}$ with suppressed $m_\nu$ via a spin symmetry mechanism, but found that the induced $\mu_{\nu_e\nu_\mu}$ is not large enough to explain recent data. Finally, we suggest a mechanism to evade stringent astrophysical limits on neutrino magnetic moments arising from stellar evolution by inducing a medium-dependent mass for the neutrino.

Comet 41P/Tuttle-Giacobini-Kresak, 45P/Honda-Mrkos-Pajdusakova, and 46P/Wirtanen: Water Production Activity over 21 Years with SOHO/SWAN

In 2017, 2018 and 2019, comets 46P/Wirtanen, 45P/Honda-Mrkos-Pajdusakova, and 41P/Tuttle-Giacobini-Kresak all had perihelion passages. Their hydrogen comae were observed by the Solar Wind ANisotropies (SWAN) all-sky hydrogen Lyman-alpha Camera on the SOlar and Heliospheric Observer (SOHO) satellite: comet 46P for the fourth time and comets 45P and 41P for the third time each since 1997. Comet 46P/Wirtanen is one of a small class of so-called hyperactive comets whose gas production rates belie their small size. This comet was the original target comet of the Rosetta mission. The Solar Wind ANisotropies (SWAN) all-sky hydrogen Lyman-alpha camera on the SOlar and Heliospheric Observer (SOHO) satellite observed the hydrogen coma of comet 46P/Wirtanen during the apparitions of 1997, 2002, 2008 and 2018. Over the 22 years, the activity decreased and its variation with heliocentric distance has changed markedly in a way very similar to that of another hyperactive comet, 103P/Hartley 2. Comet 45P/Honda-Mrkos-Pajdusakova was observed by SWAN during its perihelion apparitions of 2001, 2011 and 2017. Over this time period the activity level has remained remarkably similar, with no long-term fading or abrupt decreases. Comet 41P/Tuttle-Giacobini-Kresak was observed by SWAN in its perihelion apparitions of 2001, 2006 and 2017 and has decreased in activity markedly over the same time period. In 1973 it was known for large outbursts, which continued during the 2001 (2 outbursts) and 2006 (1 outburst) apparitions. However, over the 2001 to 2017 time period covered by the SOHO/SWAN observations the water production rates have greatly decreased by factors of 10-30 over corresponding times during its orbit.

The EBLM project. VII. Spin-orbit alignment for the circumbinary planet host EBLM J0608-59 A/TOI-1338 A

A dozen short-period detached binaries are known to host transiting circumbinary planets. In all circumbinary systems so far, the planetary and binary orbits are aligned within a couple of degrees. However, the obliquity of the primary star, which is an important tracer of their formation, evolution, and tidal history, has only been measured in one circumbinary system until now. EBLM J0608-59/TOI-1338 is a low-mass eclipsing binary system with a recently discovered circumbinary planet identified by TESS. Here, we perform high-resolution spectroscopy during primary eclipse to measure the projected stellar obliquity of the primary component. The obliquity is low, and thus the primary star is aligned with the binary and planetary orbits with a projected spin-orbit angle $\beta = 2.8 \pm 17.1$ deg. The rotation period of $18.1 \pm 1.6$ days implied by our measurement of $v\sin{i_\star}$ suggests that the primary has not yet pseudo-synchronized with the binary orbit, but is consistent with gyrochronology and weak tidal interaction with the binary companion. Our result, combined with the known coplanarity of the binary and planet orbits, is suggestive of formation from a single disc. Finally, we considered whether the spectrum of the faint secondary star could affect our measurements. We show through simulations that the effect is negligible for our system, but can lead to strong biases in $v\sin{i_\star}$ and $\beta$ for higher flux ratios. We encourage future studies in eclipse spectroscopy test the assumption of a dark secondary for flux ratios $\gtrsim 1$ ppt.

SDSS-IV MaNGA: The [$\alpha$/Fe] of Early-Type Galaxies

The mean stellar alpha-to-iron abundance ratio ([$\alpha$/Fe]) of a galaxy is an indicator of galactic star formation timescale. It is important for understanding the star formation history of early-type galaxies (ETGs) as their star formation processes have basically stopped. Using the model templates which are made by Vazdekis et al., we apply the pPXF based spectral fitting method to estimate the [$\alpha$/Fe] of 196 high signal-to-noise ratio ETGs from the MaNGA survey. The velocity dispersions within 1R$_e$ ($\sigma_{e}$) range from 27 to 270 km/s. We find a flat relation between the mean [$\alpha$/Fe] within the 1R$_e^{maj}$ ellipses and log($\sigma_{e}$), even if limiting to the massive sample with log($\sigma_{e}$/km s$^{-1}$)$>$1.9. However, the relation becomes positive after we exclude the Mg$_1$ feature in our fits, which agrees with the results from the previous work with other stellar population models, albeit with relatively large scatter. It indicates that the Vazdekis models have self-inconsistency and do not actually cover the observations in Mg$_1$. For reference, we also measure the stellar population radial gradients within 1R$_e^{maj}$ ellipses. Due to the low resolution of age estimations for old objects and the Mg$_1$ issue, the uncertainties of these gradients cannot be neglected.

Comparing the reflectivity of ungrouped carbonaceous chondrites with that of short period comets like 2P/Encke

Aims. The existence of asteroid complexes produced by the disruption of these comets suggests that evolved comets could also produce high-strength materials able to survive as meteorites. We chose as an example comet 2P/Encke, one of the largest object of the so-called Taurid complex. We compare the reflectance spectrum of this comet with the laboratory spectra of some Antarctic ungrouped carbonaceous chondrites to investigate whether some of these meteorites could be associated with evolved comets. Methods. We compared the spectral behaviour of 2P/Encke with laboratory spectra of carbonaceous chondrites. Different specimens of the common carbonaceous chondrite groups do not match the overall features and slope of comet 2P/Encke. Trying anomalous carbonaceous chondrites, we found two meteorites, Meteorite Hills 01017 and Grosvenor Mountains 95551, which could be good proxies for the dark materials forming this short-period comet. We hypothesise that these two meteorites could be rare surviving samples, either from the Taurid complex or another compositionally similar body. In any case, it is difficult to get rid of the effects of terrestrial weathering in these Antarctic finds, and further studies are needed. Future sample return from the so-called dormant comets could be also useful to establish a ground truth on the materials forming evolved short-period comets. Results. As a natural outcome, we think that identifying good proxies of 2P/Encke-forming materials might have interesting implications for future sample-return missions to evolved, potentially dormant or extinct comets. To understand the compositional nature of evolved comets is particularly relevant in the context of the future mitigation of impact hazard from these dark and dangerous projectiles.

Search for helium in the upper atmosphere of the hot Jupiter WASP-127 b using Gemini/Phoenix

Large-scale exoplanet search surveys have shown evidence that atmospheric escape is a ubiquitous process that shapes the evolution and demographics of planets. However, we lack a detailed understanding of this process because very few exoplanets discovered to date could be probed for signatures of atmospheric escape. Recently, the metastable helium triplet at 1.083 $\mu$m has been shown to be a viable window for the presence of He-rich escaping envelopes around short-period exoplanets. Our objective is to use, for the first time, the Phoenix spectrograph to search for helium in the upper atmosphere of the inflated hot Jupiter WASP-127 b. We observed one transit and reduced the data manually since there is no pipeline available. We did not find a significant in-transit absorption signal indicative of the presence of helium around WASP-127 b, and set a 90% confidence upper limit for excess absorption at 0.87% in a 0.075 nm passband covering the He triplet. Given the large scale height of this planet, the lack of a detectable feature is likely due to unfavorable photoionization conditions to populate the metastable He triplet. This conclusion is supported by the inferred low coronal and chromospheric activity of the host star and the old age of the system, which result in a relatively mild high-energy environment around the planet.

Probing Magnetic Field Morphology in Galaxy Clusters with the Gradient Technique

Magnetic fields in the intracluster medium (ICM) affect the structure and the evolution of galaxy clusters. However, their properties are largely unknown, and measuring magnetic fields in galaxy clusters is challenging, especially on large-scales outside of individual radio sources. In this work, we probe the plane-of-the-sky orientation of magnetic fields in clusters using the intensity gradients. The technique is a branch of the Gradient Technique (GT) that employs emission intensity maps from turbulent gas. We utilize the Chandra X-ray images of the Perseus, M 87, Coma, and A2597 galaxy clusters, and the VLA radio observations of the synchrotron emission from Perseus. We find that the fields predominantly follow the spiral arms in Perseus, which is in agreement with numerical simulations. The GT-predicted magnetic field shows signatures of magnetic draping around rising bubbles driven by supermassive black hole (SMBH) feedback in the centers of cool-core clusters, as well as draping around substructures merging with the Coma cluster. We calculate the mean-field orientation with respect to the radial direction in these clusters. The orientation is consistent with the prediction of heat-flux-driven buoyancy instability (HBI) in cluster cool cores, and possibly the magnetothermal instability (MTI) in cluster outskirts. There is a broad agreement between the magnetic field of Perseus predicted using the X-ray and radio data. Further numerical studies and better future observations with higher resolution and the larger effective area will help reduce the uncertainties of this method.

The impact of stellar rotation on the black hole mass-gap from pair-instability supernovae

Models of pair-instability supernovae (PISNe) predict a gap in black hole (BH) masses between $\sim 45M_\odot-120M_\odot$, which is referred to as the upper BH mass-gap. With the advent of gravitational-wave astrophysics it has become possible to test this prediction, and there is an important associated effort to understand what theoretical uncertainties modify the boundaries of this gap. In this work we study the impact of rotation on the hydrodynamics of PISNe, which leave no compact remnant, as well as the evolution of pulsational-PISNe (PPISNe), which undergo thermonuclear eruptions before forming a compact object. We perform simulations of non-rotating and rapidly-rotating stripped helium stars in a metal poor environment $(Z_\odot/50)$ in order to resolve the lower edge of the upper mass-gap. We find that the outcome of our simulations is dependent on the efficiency of angular momentum transport, with models that include efficient coupling through the Spruit-Tayler dynamo shifting the lower edge of the mass-gap upwards by $\sim 4\%$, while simulations that do not include this effect shift it upwards by $\sim 15\%$. From this, we expect the lower edge of the upper mass-gap to be dependent on BH spin, which can be tested as the number of observed BH mergers increases. Moreover, we show that stars undergoing PPISNe have extended envelopes ($R\sim 10-1000~R_\odot$) at iron-core collapse, making them promising progenitors for ultra-long gamma-ray bursts.

Luminous supernovae associated with ultra-long gamma-ray bursts from hydrogen-free progenitors extended by pulsational pair-instability

We show that the luminous supernovae associated with ultra-long gamma-ray bursts can be caused by the slow adiabatic cooling of hydrogen-free progenitors extended by pulsational pair-instability. In the accompanying paper (Marchant & Moriya 2020), we have shown that some rapidly-rotating hydrogen-free gamma-ray burst progenitors that experience pulsational pair-instability can keep an extended structure caused by pulsational pair-instability until the core collapse. Such progenitors have large radii exceeding 10 Rsun and they sometimes reach beyond 1000 Rsun at the time of the core collapse. They are, therefore, promising progenitors of ultra-long gamma-ray bursts. We here perform the light-curve modeling of the explosions of one extended hydrogen-free progenitor with a radius of 1962 Rsun. Thanks to the large progenitor radius, the ejecta experience slow adiabatic cooling and they become rapidly evolving (<~ 10 days) luminous (>~ 1e43 erg/s) supernovae even without the energy input from the 56Ni nuclear decay. They also have fast photospheric velocity above 10,000 km/s and hot photospheric temperature above 10,000 K at around the peak luminosity. We find that SN 2011kl, which is associated with the ultra-long gamma-ray burst GRB 111209A, can be explained by the adiabatic cooling phase of the extended progenitor. The ultra-long gamma-ray burst progenitors proposed in Marchant & Moriya 2020 can explain both the ultra-long gamma-ray burst duration and the accompanying supernova properties. When the gamma-ray burst jet is off-axis or choked, the luminous supernovae could be observed as fast blue optical transients without accompanying gamma-ray bursts.

Toward porting Astrophysics Visual Analytics Services to the European Open Science Cloud

The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) aims to create a federated environment for hosting and processing research data to support science in all disciplines without geographical boundaries, such that data, software, methods and publications can be shared as part of an Open Science community of practice. This work presents the ongoing activities related to the implementation of visual analytics services, integrated into EOSC, towards addressing the diverse astrophysics user communities needs. These services rely on visualisation to manage the data life cycle process under FAIR principles, integrating data processing for imaging and multidimensional map creation and mosaicing, and applying machine learning techniques for detection of structures in large scale multidimensional maps.

Spatially-resolved Stellar Population Properties of the M 51-NGC 5195 System from Multi-wavelength Photometric Data

Using multi-band photometric images of M 51 and its companion NGC 5195 from ultraviolet to optical and infrared, we investigate spatially resolved stellar population properties of this interacting system with stellar population synthesis models. The observed IRX is used to constrain dust extinction. Stellar mass is also inferred from the model fitting. By fitting observed spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with synthetical ones, we derive two-dimensional distributions of stellar age, metallicity, dust extinction, and stellar mass. In M 51, two grand-designed spiral arms extending from the bulge show young age, rich metallicity, and abundant dust. The inter-arm regions are filled with older, metal-poorer, and less dusty stellar populations. Except for the spiral arm extending from M 51 into NGC 5195, the stellar population properties of NGC 5195 are quite featureless. NGC 5195 is much older than M 51, and its core is very dusty with $A_V$ up to 1.67 mag and dense in stellar mass surface density. The close encounters might drive the dust in the spiral arm of M51 into the center of NGC 5195.

Searching for Young Stellar Objects through SEDs by Convolutional Neural Networks

Accurate measurements of statistical properties, such as the star formation rate and the lifetime of young stellar objects (YSOs) in different stages, is essential for constraining star formation theories. However, it is a difficult task to separate galaxies and YSOs based on spectral energy distributions (SEDs) alone, because they contain both thermal emission from stars and dust around them and no reliable theories can be applied to distinguish them. Here we develop a machine learning algorithm based on Convolutional Neural Network, named Spectrum Classifier of Astronomical Objects (SCAO), to classify regular stars, galaxies, and YSOs, solely based on their SEDs. Superior to previous classifiers, SCAO is solely trained by labeled data without a priori theoretical knowledge, and provides excellent results with high precision (>95%) and recall (>98%) for YSOs when data from only eight bands are included. We investigate the effects of observation errors and distance effects, and show that high accuracy performance is still maintained even when using fluxes of only three bands (IRAC 3, IRAC 4, and MIPS 1) in the long wavelengths regime. We apply SCAO to Spitzer Enhanced Imaging Products (SEIP), the most complete catalog of Spitzer observations, and found 136689 YSO candidates. Finally, based on results predicted by SCAO, we provide an intuitive contour plot for a direct identification of YSOs even without any calculation. A Monte Carlo comparison between template-based and Wiener-filter CMB dipole estimators

We review and compare two different CMB dipole estimators discussed in the literature, and assess their performances through Monte Carlo simulations. The first method amounts to simple template regression with partial sky data, while the second method is an optimal Wiener filter (or Gibbs sampling) implementation. The main difference between the two methods is that the latter approach takes into account correlations with higher-order CMB temperature fluctuations that arise from non-orthogonal spherical harmonics on an incomplete sky, which for recent CMB data sets (such as Planck) is the dominant source of uncertainty. For an accepted sky fraction of 81% and an angular CMB power spectrum corresponding to the best-fit Planck 2018 $\Lambda$CDM model, we find that the uncertainty on the recovered dipole amplitude is about six times smaller for the Wiener filter approach than for the template approach, corresponding to 0.5 and 3$~\mu$K, respectively. Similar relative differences are found for the corresponding directional parameters and other sky fractions. We note that the Wiener filter algorithm is generally applicable to any dipole estimation problem on an incomplete sky, as long as a statistical and computationally tractable model is available for the unmasked higher-order fluctuations. The methodology described in this paper forms the numerical basis for the most recent determination of the CMB solar dipole from Planck, as summarized by arXiv:2007.04997.

Probing Particle Acceleration through Broadband Early Afterglow Emission of MAGIC Gamma-Ray Burst GRB 190114C

Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov Telescopes (MAGIC) detected the gamma-ray afterglow of GRB 190114C, which can constrain microscopic parameters of the shock-heated plasma emitting non-thermal emission. Focusing on the early afterglow of this event, we numerically simulate the spectrum and multi-wavelength light curves with constant and wind-like circumstellar medium using a time-dependent code. Our results show that the electron acceleration timescale at the highest energies is likely shorter than 20 times the gyroperiod to reproduce the GeV gamma-ray flux and its spectral index reported by {\it Fermi}. This gives an interesting constraint on the acceleration efficiency for Weibel-mediated shocks. We also constrain the number fraction of non-thermal electrons $f_{\rm e}$, and the temperature of the thermal electrons. The early optical emission can be explained by the thermal synchrotron emission with $f_{\rm e} \lesssim 0.01$. On the other hand, the X-ray light curves restrict efficient energy transfer from protons to the thermal electrons, and $f_{\rm e}\sim1$ is required if the energy fraction of the thermal electrons is larger than $\sim10$\%. The parameter constraints obtained in this work give important clues to probing plasma physics with relativistic shocks.

Analysis of the helical kink stability of differently twisted magnetic flux ropes

Magnetic flux ropes (MFRs) are usually considered to be the magnetic structure that dominates the transport of helicity from the Sun into the heliosphere. They entrain a confined plasma within a helically organized magnetic structure and are able to cause geomagnetic activity. The formation, evolution and twist distribution of MFRs are issues subject to strong debate. Although different twist profiles have been suggested so far, none of them has been thoroughly explored yet. The aim of this paper is to present a theoretical study of the conditions under which MFRs with different twist profiles are kink stable and thereby shed some light on the aforementioned discussions. The magnetic field is modeled according to the circular-cylindrical analytical flux rope model in Nieves-Chinchilla et al. (2016) as well as the Lundquist and Gold-Hoyle models, and the kink stability is analyzed with a numerical method that has been developed based on Linton, Longcope, and Fisher (1996). The results are discussed in relation to MFR rotations, magnetic forces, the reversed chirality scenario and the expansion throughout the heliosphere, among others, providing a theoretical background to improve the current understanding of the internal magnetic configuration of CMEs. The data obtained by new missions like Parker Solar Probe or Solar Orbiter will give the opportunity to explore these results and ideas by observing MFRs closer than ever to the Sun.

Bright Spectroscopic Binaries: I. Orbital parameters of five systems with periods of P < 365 days

In a well-aimed search based on the recently published Gaia~DR2 radial velocity data and performed with the robotic TIGRE telescope, we have discovered 19 bright ($m_V<7.66$~mag) spectroscopic binary stars. We present the radial velocity curves of five of these stars (HD~20656, HD~27259, HD~98812, HD~150600, HD~193082) with periods of $P<365$~days. We determined their orbital parameters using the toolkit RadVel. The complete set of basic stellar parameters (effective temperature, surface gravity, metallicity, mass and age) of the primary stars are determined using the observed intermediate resolution spectra ($R\approx20,000$) with iSpec and a comparison of the position in the HRD with stellar evolution tracks. All five primary stars have already evolved to the giant phase and possess low-mass secondaries, which do not noticeably affect the spectra. Finally, we determined the minimum masses of the secondary stars of the binary systems and present conclusions about the properties of the binary systems.

Evidence of A Simple Dark Sector from XENON1T Anomaly

We propose that the massless dark photons produced from the annihilation of keV dark fermions in the Galaxy can induce the excess of electron recoil events recently observed in the XENON1T experiment. The minimal model for this is the extension of a $U(1)_{X}$ gauge symmetry, under which the massless dark photon couples to both dark and visible matter currents. We find that the best-fit parameters of the dark sector are compatible with the most stringent constraints from stellar cooling. The dark fermion relic density in both freeze-in and freeze-out scenarios has been calculated and found to be able to account for the observed dark matter abundance.

A cosmic Zevatron based on cyclotron auto-resonance

A Zevatron is an accelerator scheme envisaged to accelerate particles to ZeV energies (1 ZeV = $10^{21}$ eV). Schemes, most notably the internal shock model, have been proposed to explain the acceleration of ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray (UHECR) particles that have been sporadically detected reaching Earth since 1962. Here, the cyclotron auto-resonance acceleration (CARA) mechanism is tailored and used to demonstrate possible acceleration of particles ejected as a result of violent astrophysical processes such as the merger of a binary system or a supernova explosion. Such events result in emission of highly-energetic particles and ultra-intense beamed radiation. In the simultaneous presence of a super-strong magnetic field, the condition for cyclotron auto-resonance may be met. Thus CARA can act like a {\it booster} for particles pre-accelerated inside their progenitor by shock waves, possibly among other means. As examples, it is shown that nuclei of hydrogen, helium, and iron-56, may reach ZeV energies by CARA, under which conditions the particles, while gyrating around the lines of an ultra-strong magnetic field, also surf on the waves of a super-intense radiation field. When radiation-reaction is taken into account, it is shown that the ZeV energy gained by a particle can fall off by less than an order-of-magnitude if the resonance condition is missed by roughly less than 20\%.

A precise architecture characterization of the $\pi$ Men planetary system

The bright star $\pi$ Men was chosen as the first target for a radial velocity follow-up to test the performance of ESPRESSO, the new high-resolution spectrograph at the ESO's Very-Large Telescope (VLT). The star hosts a multi-planet system (a transiting 4 M$_\oplus$ planet at $\sim$0.07 au, and a sub-stellar companion on a $\sim$2100-day eccentric orbit) which is particularly appealing for a precise multi-technique characterization. With the new ESPRESSO observations, that cover a time span of 200 days, we aim to improve the precision and accuracy of the planet parameters and search for additional low-mass companions. We also take advantage of new photometric transits of $\pi$ Men c observed by TESS over a time span that overlaps with that of the ESPRESSO follow-up campaign. We analyse the enlarged spectroscopic and photometric datasets and compare the results to those in the literature. We further characterize the system by means of absolute astrometry with Hipparcos and Gaia. We used the spectra of ESPRESSO for an independent determination of the stellar fundamental parameters. We present a precise characterization of the planetary system around $\pi$ Men. The ESPRESSO radial velocities alone (with typical uncertainty of 10 cm/s) allow for a precise retrieval of the Doppler signal induced by $\pi$ Men c. The residuals show an RMS of 1.2 m/s, and we can exclude companions with a minimum mass less than $\sim$2 M$_\oplus$ within the orbit of $\pi$ Men c). We improve the ephemeris of $\pi$ Men c using 18 additional TESS transits, and in combination with the astrometric measurements, we determine the inclination of the orbital plane of $\pi$ Men b with high precision ($i_{b}=45.8^{+1.4}_{-1.1}$ deg). This leads to the precise measurement of its absolute mass $m_{b}=14.1^{+0.5}_{-0.4}$ M$_{Jup}$, and shows that the planetary orbital planes are highly misaligned.

Energy injection in pre-recombination era and EDGES detection

We study the possibility of explaining the recent EDGES detection by an energy injection in the pre-recombination era. Our aim is to show that the residue of this energy injection could give the resultant increase in the energy density at frequencies $x_e \equiv h\nu/(kT) \simeq 10^{-3}$, which is needed to explain the EDGES result. We consider two models of energy injection: Gaussian profile with a fixed redshift of injection and radiative decay of a non-relativistic particle. We show that the energy injection should occur in the redshift range $z\lesssim 4 \times 10^3$ to prevent free-free processes from thermalizing the injected energy. The injected energy should be nearly 200--1000 times the CMB energy at $x_e \simeq 10^{-3}$ to obtain the requisite residue. A large fraction of the injected energy gets thermalized and therefore distorts the CMB spectrum. We compute CMB spectral distortion for both the models and show that the fractional change in CMB energy density, $\Delta \rho_{\rm \scriptscriptstyle CMB}/\rho_{\rm \scriptscriptstyle CMB} \simeq 10^{-7}\hbox{--}10^{-8}$, which might be detectable with the proposed experiment PIXIE. We also outline the implication of our proposed scenario for CMB anisotropies.

Proposed Miami Impact Crater Identified as a Solutional Doline of Oolictic Limestone

This investigation addresses the discovery of a proposed impact crater located off the coast of Miami, FL under the North Atlantic Ocean. A preliminary analysis of bathymetry data obtained from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration implied a morphology consistent with a complex crater produced by a hypervelocity impact event of extraterrestrial origin. The proposed impact features include a central peak, concentric rings, and an ejecta field to the northwest. Analysis of geological data from the US Geological Survey places the strata overlying the proposed impact site as Miami Limestone, Pleistocene, accumulated during Marine Isotope Stage 5e, thereby placing the maximum age of the proposed impact crater at 80 ka to 130 ka. Three other competing hypotheses for the formation of the structure, namely a controlled maritime explosion, radial lava flow from volcano, or a depressed bioherm, doline, or karst (solutional depression) were explored throughout the investigation. To confirm the proposed structure as an impact crater, an in-situ underwater expedition was organized by Planetary Sciences, Inc. specifically to ascertain whether planar formations, shatter cones, and shock metamorphic and or other meteoritic properties were present. After analyzing the geological samples collected at the proposed impact crater, examining the morphology of analogous geologic structures, and evaluating competing hypotheses, we conclude that the structure is a solutional doline formed by the uneven dissolution of the Miami Limestone, and, accordingly, do not recommend that the structure be indexed in the Earth Impact Database

Self-Lensing in Eclipsing X-ray Binary Systems

This project examines the feasibility of using gravitational lensing to measure the mass of compact objects in eclipsing X-ray binary (XRB) systems. We investigate which kind of XRB would be most conducive for viewing the effect, by modeling the amplification curves and determining if any feature of an XRB system could potentially hinder observation of such a signal. We examine the effect of accretion disks and stellar winds, as well as the compact object mass, binary separation, and companion spectral type. Generally speaking, the lensing signal is strongest for when the angular size subtended by the companion is small, favoring relatively compact companion stars (LMXBs) although evolved massive stars (such as certain WR stars) have signals that are feasibly detectable. Interestingly, the self-lensing signal is stronger in binaries with large separations, which is the exact opposite of the case for all other techniques. Thus, a dedicated self-lensing survey would complement X-ray and radial-velocity techniques, by extending the parameter space for discovery of compact objects. Simultaneously, a self-lensing survey offers the possibility of revealing the large population of non-accreting compact objects in galactic binary systems.

Consistency of cubic Galileon cosmology: Model-independent bounds from Pantheon data

We revisit the cosmological dynamics of the cubic Galileon model in light of the recently proposed model-independent analyses of the Pantheon supernova data. At the background level, it is shown to be compatible with data and preferred over standard quintessence models. Furthermore, the model is shown to be consistent with the trans-Planckian censorship conjecture (as well as other Swampland conjectures). At the level of linear perturbations, falsifiability of the model is established from the behaviour of the growth index at large redshift.

A comparison of g(1)(\tau), g(3/2)(\tau), and g(2)(\tau), for radiation from harmonic oscillators in Brownian motion with coherent background

We compare the field-field g(1)(\tau), intensity-field g(3/2)(\tau), and intensity-intensity g(2)(\tau) correlation functions for models that are of relevance in astrophysics. We obtain expressions for the general case of a chaotic radiation, where the amplitude is Rician based on a model with an ensemble of harmonic oscillators in Brownian motion. We obtain the signal to noise ratios for two methods of measurement. The intensity-field correlation function signal to noise ratio scales with the first power of |g(1)(\tau)|. This is in contrast with the well-established result of g(2)(\tau) which goes as the square of |g(1)(\tau)|.

Explaining recently studied intermediate luminosity optical transients (ILOTs) with jet powering

We apply the jet-powered ILOT scenario to two recently studied intermediate luminosity optical transients (ILOTs), and find the relevant shell mass and jets' energy that might account for the outbursts of these ILOTs. In the jet-powered ILOT scenario accretion disk around one of the stars of a binary system launches jets. The interaction of the jets with a previously ejected slow shell converts kinetic energy to thermal energy, part of which is radiated away. We apply two models of the jet-powered ILOT scenario. In the spherical shell model the jets accelerate a spherical shell, while in the cocoon toy model the jets penetrate into the shell and inflate hot bubbles, the cocoons. We find consistent results. For the ILOT (intermediate luminosity red transient) SNhunt120 we find the shell mass and jets' energy to be Ms=0.5-1Mo and E(2j)=5e47 erg, respectively. The jets' half opening angle is alpha=30 to 60 degrees. For the second peak of the ILOT (luminous red nova) AT 2014ej we find these quantities to be Ms=1-2Mo and E(2j)=1.5e48 erg, with alpha=20 to 30 degrees. The models cannot tell whether these ILOTs were powered by a stellar merger that leaves one star, or by mass transfer where both stars survived. In both cases the masses of the shells and energies of the jets suggest that the binary progenitor system was massive, with a combined mass of M1+M2>10Mo.

Electron Energization in Quasi-Parallel Shocks: Test-Particle-Electrons in a Proton Driven Turbulence

In situ observations of energetic particles at the Earth's bow-shock attainable by the satellite missions have long created an opinion that electrons are most efficiently accelerated in a quasi-perpendicular shock geometry. However, shocks that deemed responsible for the production of cosmic ray electrons and their radiation from sources such as supernova remnants are much more powerful and larger than the Earth's bow-shock. Their remote observations suggest that electrons are accelerated very efficiently in the quasi-parallel shocks as well. In this paper we investigate the possibility that protons accelerated to high energies create sufficient wave turbulence necessary for the electron preheating and subsequent injection into the diffusive shock acceleration in a quasi-parallel shock geometry. An additional test-particle-electron population, meant as a low-density addition to the electron core-distribution the hybrid simulation operates on, is introduced. Its purpose is to investigate how these electrons are energized by the "hybrid" electromagnetic field. The reduced spatial dimensionality allowed us to dramatically increase the number of macro-ions per numerical cell and achieve the converged results for the velocity distributions of test-electrons. We discuss the electron preheating mechanisms which can make a significant part of thermal electrons accessible to the ion-driven waves observed in hybrid simulations. We find that the precursor wave field supplied by ions has considerable potential to preheat the electrons before they are shocked at the subshock. Our results indicate that a downstream thermal equilibration of the hot test-electrons and protons does not occur. Instead, the resulting electron-to-proton temperature ratio is a decreasing function of the shock Mach number, $M_\mathrm{A},$ tending to a saturation at high $M_\mathrm{A}.$

GW190425 and GW190814: Two candidate mergers of primordial black holes from the QCD epoch

The two recent gravitational-wave events GW190425 and GW190814 from the third observing run of LIGO/Virgo have both a companion which is unexpected if originated from a neutron star or a stellar black hole, with masses $[1.6-2.5]~M_\odot$ and $[2.5-2.7]~M_\odot$ and merging rates $ 460^{+1050}_{-360} $ and $ 7^{+16}_{-6}$ events/yr/Gpc$^3$ respectively, at 90\% c.l.. The possibility that these objects are Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) is investigated. The known thermal history of the Universe predicts that the PBH formation is boosted at the time of the QCD transition, inducing a peak in their distribution at this particular mass scale, and a bump around $30-50~M_\odot$. We find that the merging rates inferred from GW190425 and GW190814 are consistent with PBH binaries formed by capture in dense halos or before matter-radiation equality. At the same time, the rate of black hole mergers around $30~M_\odot$ and of sub-solar PBH mergers do not exceed the LIGO/Virgo limits. Such PBHs could explain a significant fraction, or even the totality of the Dark Matter, but they must be sufficiently strongly clustered in order to be consistent with current astrophysical limits.

Solar structure and evolution

The Sun provides a critical benchmark for the general study of stellar structure and evolution. Also, knowledge about the internal properties of the Sun is important for the understanding of solar atmospheric phenomena, including the solar magnetic cycle. Here I provide a brief overview of the theory of stellar structure and evolution, including the physical processes and parameters that are involved. This is followed by a discussion of solar evolution, extending from the birth to the latest stages. As a background for the interpretation of observations related to the solar interior I provide a rather extensive analysis of the sensitivity of solar models to the assumptions underlying their calculation. I then discuss the detailed information about the solar interior that has become available through helioseismic investigations and the detection of solar neutrinos, with further constraints provided by the observed abundances of the lightest elements. Revisions in the determination of the solar surface abundances have led to increased discrepancies, discussed in some detail, between the observational inferences and solar models. I finally briefly address the relation of the Sun to other similar stars and the prospects for asteroseismic investigations of stellar structure and evolution.

Flexible Coaxial Ribbon Cable for High-Density Superconducting Microwave Device Arrays

Superconducting electronics often require high-density microwave interconnects capable of transporting signals between temperature stages with minimal loss, cross talk, and heat conduction. We report the design and fabrication of superconducting 53 wt% Nb-47 wt% Ti (Nb47Ti) FLexible coAXial ribbon cables (FLAX). The ten traces each consist of a 0.076 mm O.D. NbTi inner conductor insulated with PFA (0.28 mm O.D.) and sheathed in a shared 0.025 mm thick Nb47Ti outer conductor. The cable is terminated with G3PO coaxial push-on connectors via stainless steel capillary tubing (1.6 mm O.D., 0.13 mm thick) soldered to a coplanar wave guide transition board. The 30 cm long cable has 1 dB of loss at 8 GHz with -60 dB nearest-neighbor forward cross talk. The loss is 0.5 dB more than commercially available superconducting coax likely due to impedance mismatches caused by manufacturing imperfections in the cable. The reported cross talk is 30 dB lower than previously developed laminated NbTi-onKapton microstrip cables. We estimate the heat load from 1 K to 90 mK to be 20 nW per trace, approximately half the computed load from the smallest commercially available superconducting coax from CryoCoax

A Lagrangian Perturbation Theory in the presence of massive neutrinos

We develop a Lagrangian Perturbation Theory (LPT) framework to study the clustering of cold dark matter (CDM) in cosmologies with massive neutrinos. We follow the trajectories of CDM particles with Lagrangian displacements fields up to third order in perturbation theory. Once the neutrinos become non-relativistic, their density fluctuations are modeled as being proportional to the CDM density fluctuations, with a scale-dependent proportionality factor. This yields a gravitational back-reaction that introduces additional scales to the linear growth function, which is accounted for in the higher order LPT kernels. Through non-linear mappings from Eulerian to Lagrangian frames, we ensure that our theory has a well behaved large scale behavior free of unwanted UV divergences, which are common when neutrino and CDM densities are not treated on an equal footing, and in resummation schemes that manifestly break Galilean invariance. We use our theory to construct correlation functions for both the underlying matter field, as well as for biased tracers using Convolution-LPT. Redshift-space distortions effects are modeled using the Gaussian Streaming Model. When comparing our analytical results to simulated data from the Quijote simulation suite, we find good accuracy down to $r=20 \,\text{Mpc} \, h^{-1}$ at redshift $z=0.5$, for the real space and redshift space monopole particle correlation functions with no free parameters. The same accuracy is reached for the redshift space quadrupole if we additionally consider an effective field theory parameter that shifts the pairwise velocity dispersion. For modeling the correlation functions of tracers we adopt a simple Lagrangian biasing scheme with only density and curvature operators, which we find sufficient to reach down to $r=20 \,\text{Mpc} \, h^{-1}$ when comparing to simulated halos.

Discovery of a hot ultramassive rapidly rotating DBA White Dwarf

We report the discovery of a nearby massive white dwarf with He-H atmosphere. The white dwarf is located at a distance of $74.5\pm0.9$ pc. Its radius, mass, effective temperature, H/He ratio and age are $R=2500\pm100$ km, $M=1.33\pm0.01$ $\rm M_{\odot}$, $T_{\mathrm{eff}}=31200\pm 1200$ K, ${\mathrm{H/He}}\sim0.1$ and $330\pm40$ Myr, respectively. The observed spectrum is redshifted by $V_{\mathrm{r}}=+240\pm15$ km s$^{-1},$ which is mostly attributed to the gravitational redshift. The white dwarf shows a regular stable photometric variability with amplitude $\Delta g\approx0.06^{\mathrm{m}}$ and period $P=353.456$ s suggesting rapid rotation. This massive, hot and rapidly rotating white dwarf is likely to originate from the merging of close binary white dwarf system that avoided explosion in a thermonuclear type Ia supernova at the Carboniferous Period of the Earth history.

Predicting the long-term stability of compact multiplanet systems

We combine analytical understanding of resonant dynamics in two-planet systems with machine learning techniques to train a model capable of robustly classifying stability in compact multi-planet systems over long timescales of $10^9$ orbits. Our Stability of Planetary Orbital Configurations Klassifier (SPOCK) predicts stability using physically motivated summary statistics measured in integrations of the first $10^4$ orbits, thus achieving speed-ups of up to $10^5$ over full simulations. This computationally opens up the stability constrained characterization of multi-planet systems. Our model, trained on $\approx 100,000$ three-planet systems sampled at discrete resonances, generalizes both to a sample spanning a continuous period-ratio range, as well as to a large five-planet sample with qualitatively different configurations to our training dataset. Our approach significantly outperforms previous methods based on systems' angular momentum deficit, chaos indicators, and parametrized fits to numerical integrations. We use SPOCK to constrain the free eccentricities between the inner and outer pairs of planets in the Kepler-431 system of three approximately Earth-sized planets to both be below 0.05. Our stability analysis provides significantly stronger eccentricity constraints than currently achievable through either radial velocity or transit duration measurements for small planets, and within a factor of a few of systems that exhibit transit timing variations (TTVs). Given that current exoplanet detection strategies now rarely allow for strong TTV constraints (Hadden et al., 2019), SPOCK enables a powerful complementary method for precisely characterizing compact multi-planet systems. We publicly release SPOCK for community use.

Revisiting constraints on the maximum neutron star mass in light of GW190814

We investigate the maximum neutron star mass based on constraints from low-energy nuclear physics, neutron star tidal deformabilities from GW170817, and simultaneous mass-radius measurements of PSR J0030+045 from NICER. Our prior distribution is based on a combination of nuclear modeling valid in the vicinity of normal nuclear densities together with the assumption of a maximally stiff equation of state at high densities. The transition density is treated as a model parameter with uniform prior. Bayesian likelihood functions involving measured neutron star tidal deformabilities and radii are subsequently used to generate equation of state posteriors. We demonstrate that a modification of the highly uncertain supra-saturation density equation of state allows for the support of $2.5-2.6\,M_\odot$ neutron stars without strongly modifying the properties (radius, tidal deformability, and moment of inertia) of $\sim 1.4\,M_\odot$ neutron stars. However, the properties of neutron stars with masses $\sim 2.0\,M_\odot$ are significantly different under the two competing assumptions that the GW190814 secondary was a black hole or a neutron star.

Interpreting deep learning models for weak lensing

Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) are powerful algorithms that have been proven capable of extracting non-Gaussian information from weak lensing (WL) data sets. Understanding which features in the data determine the output of these nested, non-linear algorithms is an important but challenging task. We analyze a DNN that has been found in previous work to accurately recover cosmological parameters in simulated maps of the WL convergence ($\kappa$). We derive constraints on the cosmological parameter pair $(\Omega_m,\sigma_8)$ from a combination of three commonly used WL statistics (power spectrum, lensing peaks, and Minkowski functionals), using ray-traced simulated $\kappa$ maps. We show that the network can improve the inferred parameter constraints relative to this combination by $20\%$ even in the presence of realistic levels of shape noise. We apply a series of well established saliency methods to interpret the DNN and find that the most relevant pixels are those with extreme $\kappa$ values. For noiseless maps, regions with negative $\kappa$ account for $86-69\%$ of the attribution of the DNN output, defined as the square of the saliency in input space. In the presence of shape nose, the attribution concentrates in high convergence regions, with $36-68\%$ of the attribution in regions with $\kappa > 3 \sigma_{\kappa}$.

Energy-Momentum portal to dark matter and emergent gravity

We propose a new scenario where dark matter belongs to a secluded sector coupled to the Standard Model through energy--momentum tensors. Our model is motivated by constructions where gravity {\it emerges} from a hidden sector, the graviton being identified by the kinetic term of the fields in the secluded sector. Supposing that the lighter particle of the secluded sector is the dark component of the Universe, we show that we can produce it in a sufficiently large amount despite the suppressed couplings of the theory, thanks to large temperatures of the thermal bath in the early stage of the Universe.

Stability of Parker's Solar Wind Solution Near the Solar Surface

Mass Ratios of Merging Double Neutron Stars as Implied by the Milky Way Population

Of the seven known double neutron stars (DNS) with precisely measure masses in the Milky Way that will merge within a Hubble time, all but one has a mass ratio, $q$, close to unity. Recently, precise measurements of three post-Keplerian parameters in the DNS J1913$+$1102 constrain this system to have a significantly non-unity mass ratio of 0.78$\pm$0.03. One may be tempted to conclude that approximately one out of seven (14\%) DNS mergers detected by gravitational wave observatories will have mass ratios significantly different from unity. However J1913$+$1102 has a relatively long merger time of 470 Myr. We show that when merger times and observational biases are taken into account, the population of Galactic DNSs imply that $\simeq98\%$ of all merging DNSs will have $q>$0.9. We then apply two separate fitting formulas informed by 3D hydrodynamic simulations of DNS mergers to our results on Galactic DNS masses, finding that either $\simeq$0.004 ${M_{\odot}}$ or $\simeq$0.010 ${M_{\odot}}$ of material will be ejected at merger, depending on which formula is used. These ejecta masses have implications for both the peak bolometric luminosities of electromagnetic counterparts (which we find to be $\sim$10$^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$) as well as the $r$-process enrichment of the Milky Way.

The role of clouds on the depletion of methane and water dominance in the transmission spectra of irradiated exoplanets

Observations suggest an abundance of water and paucity of methane in the majority of observed exoplanetary atmospheres. We isolate the effect of atmospheric processes to investigate possible causes. Previously, we studied the effect of effective temperature, surface gravity, metallicity, carbon-to-oxygen ratio, and stellar type assuming cloud-free thermochemical equilibrium and disequilibrium chemistry. However, under these assumptions, methane remains a persisting spectral feature in the transmission spectra of exoplanets over a certain parameter space, the Methane Valley. In this work we investigate the role of clouds on this domain and we find that clouds change the spectral appearance of methane in two direct ways: 1) by heating-up the photosphere of colder planets, and 2) by obscuring molecular features. The presence of clouds also affects methane features indirectly: 1) cloud heating results in more evaporation of condensates and hence releases additional oxygen, causing water dominated spectra of colder carbon-poor exoplanets, and 2) HCN/CO production results in a suppression of depleted methane features by these molecules. The presence of HCN/CO and a lack of methane could be an indication of cloud formation on hot exoplanets. Cloud heating can also deplete ammonia. Therefore, a simultaneous depletion of methane and ammonia is not unique to photochemical processes. We propose that the best targets for methane detection are likely to be massive but smaller planets with a temperature around 1450 K orbiting colder stars. We also construct Spitzer synthetic color-maps and find that clouds can explain some of the high contrast observations by IRAC's channel 1 and 2.

Pulsational pair-instability supernovae in very close binaries

Pair-instability and pulsational pair-instability supernovae (PPISN) have not been unambiguously observed so far. They are, however, promising candidates for the progenitors of the heaviest binary black hole (BBH) mergers detected. If these BBHs are the product of binary evolution, then PPISNe could occur in very close binaries. Motivated by this, we discuss the implications of a PPISN happening with a close binary companion, and what impact these events have on the formation of merging BBHs through binary evolution. For this, we have computed a set of models of metal-poor ($Z_\odot/10$) single helium stars using the \texttt{MESA} software instrument. For PPISN progenitors with pre-pulse masses $>50M_\odot$ we find that, after a pulse, heat deposited throughout the layers of the star that remain bound cause it to expand to more than $100R_\odot$ for periods of $10^2-10^4\;$~yrs depending on the mass of the progenitor. This results in long-lived phases of Roche-lobe overflow or even common-envelope events if there is a close binary companion, leading to additional electromagnetic transients associated to PPISN eruptions. If we ignore the effect of these interactions, we find that mass loss from PPISNe reduces the final black hole spin by $\sim 30\%$, induces eccentricities below the threshold of detectability of the LISA observatory, and can produce a double-peaked distribution of measured chirp masses in BBH mergers observed by ground-based detectors.

Lensing of fast radio bursts: future constraints on primordial black hole density with an extended mass function and a new probe of exotic compact fermion and boson stars

The discovery of gravitational waves from binary black hole mergers has renewed interest in primordial black holes forming a part of the dark matter density of our Universe. Various tests have been proposed to test this hypothesis. One of the cleanest tests is the lensing of fast radio bursts. In this situation, the presence of a compact object near the line of sight produces two images of the radio burst. If the images are sufficiently separated in time, this technique can constrain the presence of primordial black holes. One can also try to detect the lensed image of the mini-bursts within the main burst. We show that this technique can produce the leading constraints over a wide range in lens masses $\gtrsim$ 2 $M_\odot$ if the primordial black holes follow a single mass distribution. Even if the primordial black holes have an extended mass distribution, the constraints that can be derived from lensing of fast radio bursts will be the most constraining over wide ranges of the parameter space. We show that this technique can probe exotic compact boson stars and fermion stars made up of beyond the Standard Model particles. This search strategy is competitive and can provide the leading constraints on parts of the particle physics parameter space when compared with gravitational wave observations.

First astrophysical constraints on dark matter interactions with ordinary matter at low relative velocity

We derive constraints on cross sections for dark matter interactions with ordinary matter at very low relative velocity, $v_{\rm rel}$ $\approx$ 17 km/s, by requiring that the heating/cooling due to DM interacting with gas in the Leo T dwarf galaxy not exceed the radiative cooling rate of the gas. This gives strong limits on sub-GeV millicharged DM, which add to constraints on the recent EDGES 21 cm absorption anomaly. We also improve the bounds on DM-baryon and DM-electron cross-sections for arbitrary velocity dependences by combining the heating/cooling constraints from Leo T and suitable Galactic gas clouds, and we obtain stronger bounds than all the previous literature on ultra-light hidden photon DM for nearly all of the mass range $10^{-23}\lesssim m_{\rm DM} \lesssim 10^{-10}$ eV.

Does GW190425 require an alternative formation pathway than a fast-merging channel?

The LIGO/Virgo Scientific Collaboration (LVC) recently announced the detection of a compact object binary merger, GW190425, with a total mass of $3.4^{+0.3}_{-0.1}$ M$_{\odot}$, and individual component masses in the range of about 1.1 to 2.5 $M_{\odot}$. If the constituent compact objects are neutron stars, then the total mass is five standard deviations higher than the mean of $2.66\pm 0.12$ M$_{\odot}$ for Galactic binary neutron stars (BNSs). LVC suggests such massive BNS systems are born from a fast-merging channel, and therefore, their non-detection in the Galaxy to be due to a selection effect. However, we are unable to reconcile the inferred formation efficiency from the reported merger rate, $\mathcal{R}_{\rm GW190425}=460^{+1050}_{-390}$ yr$^{-1}$ Gpc$^{-3}$, with predictions from our own study for fast-merging BNS systems. Moreover, the comparable merger rates of GW190425, and GW170817 are possibly in tension with our results for two reasons: (i) more massive systems are expected to have a lower formation rate, and (ii) fast merging channels should constitute $\lesssim 10\%$ of the total BNS systems if case BB unstable mass transfer is permitted to take place as a formation pathway. We argue that to account for the high merger rate of GW190425 as a BNS system requires: (i) revisiting our understanding of NS formation in supernova explosions, or (ii): that more massive NSs need to be preferentially born with either very weak or very high magnetic fields so that they would be undetectable in the radio surveys. Perhaps massive NSs detected in NS-white dwarf binaries are our clues to the formation path of GW190425 systems.

A Potentially Detectable Gamma-Ray Line in the Fermi Galactic Center Excess -- In Light of One-Step Cascade Annihilations of Secluded (Vector) Dark Matter via the Higgs Portal

We show the presence of a potentially detectable gamma-ray line in the Fermi Galactic center excess in light of the secluded (vector) dark matter (DM) model in which the hidden scalar, nearly degenerate with DM in mass, mediates the interaction of the secluded DM with the Standard Model (SM) due to its mixing with the SM Higgs. We find that the parameter region $m_X\in[60, 132]$ GeV can provide a good fit to the Fermi Galactic center gamma-ray excess spectrum, appearing a prominent gamma-ray line with the energy $\in [30, 66]$ GeV. The best fit gives $m_X\simeq m_S \simeq 86$ GeV with a $p$-value$\, =0.42$, so that the resultant gamma-ray line, arising from the decay of the scalar mediator into $\gamma\gamma$, peaks at 43 GeV. We derive constraints on the annihilation cross section from the Fermi-LAT gamma-ray line search, gamma-ray observations of the Fermi-LAT dwarf spheroidal galaxies, and Planck cosmic microwave background measurement. For the secluded vector DM model, the parameter space constrained by the current XENON1T and future LUX-ZEPLIN is shown. Finally, for the mixing angle between the Higgs sectors, we discuss its lower bound, which is required by the big bang nucleosynthesis constraint and relevant to the hidden sector decoupling temperature.

Relations among structural parameters in barred galaxies with a direct measurement of bar pattern speed

We investigate the relations between the properties of bars and their host galaxies in a sample of 77 nearby barred galaxies, spanning a wide range of morphological types and luminosities, with 34 SB0-SBa and 43 SBab-SBc galaxies. The sample includes all the galaxies with reliable direct measurement of their bar pattern speed based on long-slit or integral-field stellar spectroscopy using the Tremaine-Weinberg method. We limited our analysis to the galaxies with a relatively small relative error on the bar pattern speed (smaller than 50 per cent) and not hosting an ultrafast bar. For each galaxy, we collected the radius, strength, pattern speed, corotation radius, and rotation rate for the bar and we also collected the Hubble type and absolute SDSS r-band magnitude. We also used literature bulge-to-total luminosity ratio for a subsample of 53 galaxies with an available photometric decomposition. We confirmed earlier observational findings that longer bars rotate with lower bar pattern speeds, shorter bars are weaker, and bars with a small bar rotation rate rotate with higher bar pattern speeds and have smaller corotation radii. In addition, we found that stronger bars rotate with lower bar pattern speeds, as predicted from the interchange of angular momentum during bar evolution, which in turn may depend on different galaxy properties. Moreover, we report that brighter galaxies host longer bars, which rotate with lower bar pattern speeds and have larger corotation radii. This result is in agreement with a scenario of downsizing in bar formation, if more massive galaxies formed earlier and had sufficient time to slow down, grow in length, and push corotation outwards.

Orphan GRB afterglow searches with the Pan-STARRS1 COSMOS survey

We present the result of a search for orphan Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) afterglows in the Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) COSMOS survey. There is extensive theoretical and observational evidence suggesting that GRBs are collimated jets; the direct observation of orphan GRB afterglows would further support this model. An optimal survey strategy is designed by coupling the PS1 survey with the Subaru/Hyper-Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey. The PS1 COSMOS survey, one of the survey fields in the PS1 Medium Deep Survey (PS1/MDS), searches a field of 7 deg$^2$ from December 2011 to January 2014, reaching a limiting magnitude R $\sim$ 23. The dense cadence of PS1/MDS is crucial for identifying transients, and the deep magnitude reached by the HSC survey (R $\sim$ 26) is important for evaluating potential GRB hosts. A transient classification method is employed to select potential orphan GRB afterglow candidates. After a thorough analysis of the transient and host galaxy properties, we conclude that there are no candidates in this survey field. The null result implies that the consideration of jet structures is essential for further orphan GRB afterglow surveys.

High-Contrast Integral Field Spectrograph (HCIFS): multi-spectral wavefront control and reduced-dimensional system identification

Any high-contrast imaging instrument in a future large space-based telescope will include an integral field spectrograph (IFS) for measuring broadband starlight residuals and characterizing the exoplanet's atmospheric spectrum. In this paper, we report the development of a high-contrast integral field spectrograph (HCIFS) at Princeton University and demonstrate its application in multi-spectral wavefront control. Moreover, we propose and experimentally validate a new reduced-dimensional system identification algorithm for an IFS imaging system, which improves the system's wavefront control speed, contrast and computational and data storage efficiency.

Apparent Superluminality of Lensed Gravitational Waves

We consider gravitational wave (GW) sources with an associated electromagnetic (EM) counterpart, and analyze the time delay between both signals in the presence of lensing. If GWs have wavelengths comparable to the Schwarzschild radius of astrophysical lenses, they must be treated with wave optics, whereas EM waves are typically well within the approximation of geometric optics. With concrete examples, we confirm that the GW signal never arrives before its EM counterpart, if both are emitted at the same time. However, during the inspiral of a binary, peaks of the GW waveform can arrive before their EM counterpart. We stress this is only an apparent superluminality since the GW waveform is both distorted and further delayed with respect to light. In any case, measuring the multi-messenger time delay and correctly interpreting it has important implications for unveiling the distribution of lenses, testing the nature of gravity, and probing the cosmological expansion history.

TATOO: a tidal-chronology standalone tool to estimate the age of massive close-in planetary systems

The presence of a massive close-in planet with an orbital period of a few days or less around a low-mass star can possibly results in a strong variation of the properties of the central star. Indeed, star-planet tidal interactions generate exchanges of angular momentum that can results in tidal spin-up. This effect could then lead to gyrochronological ages biased towards younger ages. Aims. This article provides the community with TATOO, a standalone tool based on tidal-chronology, to estimate the age of a massive close-in planetary system by only using its observed properties: mass of the planet and the star, stellar rotational and planetary orbital periods. I used the numerical code described in Gallet et al. (2018) to create a large multi-parametric grid of synthetic star-planet systems evolution, and 3D interpolation method to provide a fairly precise age estimate, using tidal-chronology technique, of any given planetary systems composed of at least of one massive close-in planet. About half of the planetary systems investigated in this work are subject to tidal spin-up bias. I pointed out that this bias linearly scales with the ratio between rotation to orbital period, making this quantity a useful proxy to rapidly investigate the need to use tidal-chronology. Moreover, while being model dependent, TATOO can also be used even if no rotational departure is present. In that case, it gives results in agreement with the classical gyrochronological analysis. TATOO is a useful tool specifically designed for massive close-in planetary systems that can also be used as a classical gyrochronological tool. For now it is the only publicly available software to estimate the age of massive close-in planetary systems subject to tidal spin-up. In that sense, tidal-chronology can be seen as a first order correction of the impact of tidal interaction on gyrochronology.

A Search for the modern counterparts of the Far Eastern guest stars 369 CE, 386 CE, and 393 CE

In this study, we apply our previously developed method to investigate ancient transient sightings in order to derive consequences for modern astrophysical problems.We present case studies of three observations of so called 'guest stars' in the 4th century CE which lasted several months each. These three observations had been suggested and discussed as possible supernovae but slow novae are also viable alternatives. Our careful re-interpretation of the historical texts and the currently known objects in the given fields shed new light on this topic. In particular, for the two events in 386 and 393 CE we suggest possible supernova identifications, while in all three cases there are interesting candidates for past classical or recurrent nova eruptions among known cataclysmic variables (CVs) and/or symbiotic stars. The transient of 369, we suggest to explain as classical and possibly recurrent nova instead of a supernova. The most plausible candidates are BZ Cam, a CV with a possible nova shell, or CQ Dra, a naked eye multiple system perhaps able to permit an overwhelmingly bright nova with day-time visibility.

Search for high energy $\gamma$-rays from the direction of the candidate electromagnetic counterpart to the binary black hole merger gravitational-wave event S190521g

The gravitational-wave event S190521g -- a likely binary black hole merger in the accretion disk of an active galactic nucleus -- was accompanied by an optical counterpart. Such dense environments around luminous energy release regions are favourable for high energy $\gamma$-ray production. We report on a search for high energy $\gamma$-rays from the direction of the candidate electromagnetic counterpart to the S190521g event using publicly-available data of the Fermi-LAT space $\gamma$-ray telescope. No significant signal was found. We present upper limits on the spectral energy distribution of the source in the 100 MeV - 300 GeV energy range. We discuss the importance of studying S190521g-like transients in the context of cosmic ray acceleration, $\gamma$-ray and neutrino production in such sources.

Feebly Interacting $U(1)_{\rm B-L}$ Gauge Boson Warm Dark Matter and XENON1T Anomaly

The recent observation of an excess in the electronic recoil data by the XENON1T detector has drawn many attentions as a potential hint for an extension of the Standard Model (SM). Absorption of a vector boson with the mass of $m_{A'}\!\in\!(2\,{\rm keV},\!3\,{\rm keV})$ is one of the feasible explanations to the excess. In the case where the vector boson explains the dark matter (DM) population today, it is highly probable that the vector boson belongs to a class of the warm dark matter (WDM) due to its suspected mass regime. In such a scenario, providing a good fit for the excess, the kinetic mixing $\kappa\!\sim\!10^{-15}$ asks for a non-thermal origin of the vector DM. In this letter, we consider a scenario where the gauge boson is nothing but the $U(1)_{\rm B-L}$ gauge boson and its non-thermal origin is attributed to the decay of the scalar talking to the SM sector via a portal with the SM Higgs boson. We discuss implications for the dark sector interactions that the vector DM offers when it serves as a resolution to both the small scale problems that $\Lambda$CDM model encounters and the XENON1T anomaly.

AstroSat view of LMC X-2: Evolution of broadband X-ray spectral properties along a complete Z-track

In this paper, we report the first results of the extragalactic Z-source LMC X-2 obtained using the $\sim$ 140 ks observations with {\it Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC)} and {\it Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT)} onboard {\it AstroSat}. The HID created with the {\it LAXPC} data revealed a complete Z-pattern of the source, showing all the three branches. We studied the evolution of the broadband X-ray spectra in the energy range of $0.5-20.0$ keV along the Z-track, a first such study of this source. The X-ray spectra of the different parts of the Z-pattern were well described by an absorbed Comptonized component. An absence of the accretion disc component suggests that the disc is most probably obscured by a Comptonized region. The best fit electron temperature ($kT_e$) was found to be in the range of $1.7-2.1$ keV and optical depth ($\tau$) was found to be in the range of $13.2-17.5$. The optical depth ($\tau$) increased as the source moved from the normal/flaring branch (NB/FB) vertex to the upper part of the FB, suggesting a possible outflow triggered by a strong radiation pressure. The power density spectra (PDS) of HB and NB could be fitted with a pure power-law of index $\alpha$ $\sim$ 1.68 and 0.83 respectively. We also found a weak evidence of QPO (2.8~$\sigma$) in the FB. The intrinsic luminosity of the source varied between $(1.03-1.79)$ $\times$ 10$^{38}$ ergs/s. We discuss our results by comparing with other Z-sources and the previous observations of LMC X-2.

Counts-in-Cells of subhalos in the Illustris-TNG simulations: the role of baryonic physics

We present an analysis of the Counts-in-Cells (CiC) statistics of subhalos in the publically available Illustris-TNG cosmological simulations (TNG100-1, TNG100-3 and TNG300-3), in redshifts ranging from $z = 0$ to $z=5$. We fit the CiC statistics to two models: the gravitational quasi-equilibrium distribution (GQED) and the negative binomial distribution (NBD). We analyzed differences between ``full'' runs and their associated ``dark-only'' counterparts, in terms of GQED and NBD, and also by the use of gaussian kernel density estimates. We discuss the behaviour of the best-fit parameters $\bar{N}$ (average number of subhalos per cell), and the clustering parameters $b$ (GQED) and $g$ (NBD), in terms of redshifts and comoving cell sizes. We found that ``full'' and ``dark-only'' TNG runs follow similar CiC distributions. However, there are quantifiable distinctions between these sets of runs in the evolution and scaling of the best-fit parameters. We compare our results with previous numerical, observational and ``mock'' catalogs, and found similar scaling and evolutionary trends in all samples, up to factors in the amplitude of parameter values, possibly regulated by different magnitude cutoffs in the observational samples. Our results suggest the overall validity of the GQED and NBD models for describing the large-scale statistics of extended, multi-component gravitational systems and subject to complex baryonic physics. Our analysis indicate that gravithermodynamics is generally suitable for describing gravitational clustering in the presence of baryonic physics and, with proper refinements, it may provide additional theoretical guidance for the modelling of bias.

The Complexity and Information Content of Simulated Universes}

The emergence of a complex, large-scale organisation of cosmic matter into the Cosmic Web is a beautiful exemplification of how complexity can be produced by simple initial conditions and simple physical laws. In the epoch of Big Data in astrophysics, connecting the stunning variety of multi-messenger observations to the complex interplay of fundamental physical processes is an open challenge. In this contribution, I discuss a few relevant applications of Information Theory to the task of objectively measuring the complexity of modern numerical simulations of the Universe. When applied to cosmological simulations, complexity analysis makes it possible to measure the total information necessary to model the cosmic web. It also allow us to monitor which physical processes are mostly responsible for the emergence of complex dynamical behaviour across cosmic epochs and environments, and possibly to improve mesh refinement strategies in the future.

Chandra Survey of Nearby Galaxies: an Extended Catalog

She et al. (Paper I) assembled a catalog of nearby galaxies observed with the Chandra X-ray observatory, by cross-matching galaxies in the NASA Extragalactic Database (NED) within 50 Mpc and the Chandra archive. That sample has enabled searches of low-mass black holes associated with late-type, bulgeless galaxies and studies of the accretion physics related to low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs). Using a similar approach, here we construct an extended catalog up to 150 Mpc and make a cross-correlation with a catalog of nearby galaxy groups. The new catalog consists of 1,964 galaxies, out of which 1,692 have a redshift independent distance, 1,557 are listed in the galaxy group catalog with group properties available, and 782 are identified to be X-ray AGN candidates. Compared with the AGN sample in Paper I, the new sample is 2.5 times larger in size (782 vs. 314), with ~80% of the new members having an Eddington ratio less than 10^-4. We confirm that the conclusions based on the previous sample remain. With the new sample, we compare AGN fractions between early-type and late-type galaxies, and between central and satellite galaxies in groups, and find no significant difference. This suggests that the secular process is the dominant mechanism feeding AGNs in the local universe.

Protostellar collapse: the conditions to form dust rich protoplanetary disks

Dust plays a key role during star, disk and planet formation. Yet, its dynamics during the protostellar collapse remains a poorly investigated field. Recent studies seem to indicate that dust may decouple efficiently from the gas during these early stages. We aim to understand how much and in which regions dust grains concentrate during the early phases of the protostellar collapse, and see how it depends on the properties of the initial cloud and of the solid particles. We use the multiple species dust dynamics solver of the grid-based code RAMSES to perform various simulations of dusty collapses. We perform hydrodynamical and MHD simulations where we vary the maximum grain size, the thermal-to-gravitational energy ratio and the magnetic properties of the cloud. We simulate the simultaneous evolution of ten neutral dust grains species with grain sizes varying from a few nm to a few hundredth of microns. We obtain a significant decoupling between the gas and the dust for grains of typical sizes a few 10 microns. This decoupling strongly depends on the thermal-to-gravitational energy ratio, the grain sizes or the inclusion of a magnetic field. With a semi-analytic model calibrated on our results, we show that the dust ratio mostly varies exponentially with the initial Stokes number at a rate that depends on the local cloud properties. We find that larger grains tend to settle and drift efficiently in the first-core and in the newly formed disk. This can produce dust-to-gas ratios of several times the initial value. Dust concentrates in high density regions and is depleted in low density regions. The size at which grains decouple from the gas depends on the initial properties of the clouds. Since dust can not necessarily be used as a proxy for gas during the collapse, we emphasize on the necessity of including the treatment of its dynamics in collapse simulations.

On the nature of GW190814 and its impact on the understanding of supranuclear matter

The observation of a compact object with a mass of $2.50-2.67M_{\odot}$ on August 14, 2019, by the LIGO Scientific and Virgo collaborations (LVC) has the potential to improve our understanding of the supranuclear equation of state. While the gravitational-wave analysis of the LVC suggests that GW190814 likely was a binary black hole system, the secondary component could also have been the heaviest neutron star observed to date. We use our previously derived nuclear-physics--multi-messenger astrophysics framework to address the nature of this object. Based on our findings, we determine GW190814 to be a binary black hole merger with a probability of $>99.9\%$. Even if we weaken previously employed constraints on the maximum mass of neutron stars, the probability of a binary black hole origin is still $\sim 86\%$. Furthermore, we study the impact that this observation has on our understanding of the nuclear equation of state by analyzing the allowed region in the mass-radius diagram of neutron stars for both a binary black hole or neutron star - black hole scenario. We find that the unlikely scenario in which the secondary object was a neutron star requires rather stiff equations of state with a maximum speed of sound $c_s\geq \sqrt{0.6}$ times the speed of light, while the binary black hole scenario does not offer any new insight.

Quantum-gravitational trans-Planckian radiation by a rotating black hole

We recently studied the energy behavior of a quantum-corrected time-dependent black hole. The system analyzed was a quantum-corrected Kerr solution that settles down to a stationary configuration as the time dependence fades out. A trans-Planckian energy scaling in the vicinity of the event horizon resulted, and we proposed the trans-Planckian radiation to be the missing link in the glowing mechanism of active galactic nuclei. The main goal of the present work is to examine the scaling and structure of the radiation by analyzing the quantum momentum density. We again observe a trans-Planckian behavior. Furthermore, the momentum density displays structures that are indicative of a disk-like configuration near the equator and a collimated outflow of matter from the poles. The bipolar outflow (disk-like structure) should be an essential part of the underlying mechanism for jets (accretion disks) of active galactic nuclei.

Explosion Energies for Core-collapse Supernovae I: Analytic, Spherically Symmetric Solutions

Recent multi-dimensional simulations of core-collapse supernovae are producing successful explosions and explosion-energy predictions. In general, the explosion-energy evolution is monotonic and relatively smooth, suggesting a possible analytic solution. We derive analytic solutions for the expansion of the gain region under the following assumptions: spherical symmetry, one-zone shell, and powered by neutrinos and $\alpha$ particle recombination. We consider two hypotheses: I) explosion energy is powered by neutrinos and $\alpha$ recombination, II) explosion energy is powered by neutrinos alone. Under these assumptions, we derive the fundamental dimensionless parameters and analytic scalings. For the neutrino-only hypothesis (II), the asymptotic explosion energy scales as $E_{\infty} \approx 1.5 M_g v_0^2 \eta^{2/3}$, where $M_g$ is the gain mass, $v_0$ is the free-fall velocity at the shock, and $\eta$ is a ratio of the heating and dynamical time scales. Including both neutrinos and recombination (hypothesis I), the asymptotic explosion energy is $E_{\infty} \approx M_g v_0^2 (1.5\eta^{2/3} + \beta f(\rho_0))$, where $\beta$ is the dimensionless recombination parameter. We use Bayesian inference to fit these analytic models to simulations. Both hypotheses fit the simulations of the lowest progenitor masses that tend to explode spherically. The fits do not prefer hypothesis I or II; however, prior investigations suggest that $\alpha$ recombination is important. As expected, neither hypothesis fits the higher-mass simulations that exhibit aspherical explosions. In summary, this explosion-energy theory is consistent with the spherical explosions of low progenitor masses; the inconsistency with higher progenitor-mass simulations suggests that a theory for them must include aspherical dynamics.

On the quantum origin of inflation in the geometric inflation model

In this paper we investigate the cosmological dynamics of geometric inflation by means of the tools of the dynamical systems theory. We focus in the study of two explicit models where it is possible to sum the infinite series of higher curvature corrections that arises in the formalism. These would be very interesting possibilities since, if regard gravity as a quantum effective theory, a key feature is that higher powers of the curvature invariants are involved at higher loops. Hence, naively, consideration of the whole infinite tower of curvature invariants amounts to consideration of all of the higher order loops. The global dynamics of these toy models in the phase space is discussed and the quantum origin of primordial inflation is exposed.

Are the spiral arms in the MWC 758 protoplanetary disc driven by a companion inside the cavity?

Spiral arms in protoplanetary discs are thought to be linked to the presence of companions. We test the hypothesis that the double spiral arm morphology observed in the transition disc MWC 758 can be generated by an $\approx 10$ M$_{\rm Jup}$ companion on an eccentric orbit internal to the spiral arms. Previous studies on MWC 758 have assumed an external companion. We compare simulated observations from three dimensional hydrodynamics simulations of disc-companion interaction to scattered light, infrared and CO molecular line observations, taking into account observational biases. The inner companion hypothesis is found to explain the double spiral arms, as well as several additional features seen in MWC 758 -- the arc in the northwest, substructures inside the spiral arms, the cavity in CO isotopologues, and the twist in the kinematics. Testable predictions include detection of fainter spiral structure, detection of a point source south-southeast of the primary, and proper motion of the spiral arms.

Plasma Diagnostics of the Supernova Remnant N132D Using Deep XMM-Newton Observations with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer

We present XMM-Newton observations of N132D, the X-ray brightest supernova remnant (SNR) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), using the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) that enables high-resolution spectroscopy in the soft X-ray band. A dozen emission lines from L-shell transitions of various elements at intermediate charge states are newly detected in the RGS data integrating the ~200-ks on-axis observations. The 0.3-2.0-keV spectra require at least three components of thermal plasmas with different electron temperatures and indicate clear evidence of non-equilibrium ionization (NEI). Our detailed spectral diagnostics further reveal that the forbidden-to-resonance line ratios of O VII and Ne IX are both higher than expected for typical NEI plasmas. This enhancement could be attributed to either resonance scattering or emission induced by charge exchange in addition to a possible contribution from the superposition of multiple temperature components, although the lack of spatial information prevents us from concluding which is most likely.

A pole-to-equator ocean overturning circulation on Enceladus

Enceladus is believed to have a saltwater global ocean with a mean depth of at least 30~km, heated from below at the ocean-core interface and cooled at the top, where the ocean loses heat to the icy lithosphere above. This scenario suggests an important role for vertical convection to influence the interior properties and circulation of Enceladus' ocean. Additionally, the ice shell that encompasses the ocean has dramatic meridional thickness variations that, in steady state, must be sustained against processes acting to remove these ice thickness anomalies. One mechanism that would maintain variations in the ice shell thickness involves spatially-separated regions of freezing and melting at the ocean-ice interface. Here, we use an idealized, dynamical ocean model forced by an observationally-guided density forcing at the ocean-ice interface to argue that Enceladus' interior ocean should support a meridional overturning circulation. This circulation establishes an interior density structure that is more complex than in studies that have focused only on convection, including a shallow freshwater lens in the polar regions. Spatially-separated sites of ice formation and melt enable Enceladus to sustain a significant vertical and horizontal stratification, which impacts interior heat transport, and is critical for understanding the relationship between a global ocean and the planetary energy budget. The presence of low salinity layers near the polar ocean-ice interface also influences whether samples measured from the plumes are representative of the global ocean.

Conformal theory of gravitation and cosmology

The postulate of universal local Weyl scaling (conformal) symmetry modifies both general relativity and the Higgs scalar field model. Conformal gravity (CG) has recently been fitted to rotation data for 138 galaxies. The conformal Higgs model (CHM) acquires a gravitational effect that fits observed Hubble expansion for redshifts $z\leq 1$ (7.33 Gyr) accurately with only one free constant parameter. The astrophysical data fitted by these two conformal models is shown here to account for both arbitrary parameters $w^2$ and $\lambda$ of postulated Higgs potential $V=-(w^2-\lambda\Phi^\dagger\Phi)\Phi^\dagger\Phi$, responsible for symmetry-breaking finite $\Phi^\dagger\Phi$ in electroweak particle theory. The present analysis resolves recent criticism of CG. CG and CHM are shown here to be interdependent but compatible. Nonclassical CG acceleration $\gamma$ is shown to be determined by the CHM. Conformal theory explains dark energy and does not require dark matter, a viable alternative to the $\Lambda$CDM standard model. A recently established empirical relationship between classical and nonclassical galactic radial acceleration requires parameter $\gamma$ to be independent of galactic mass. Conformal theory is shown here to be consistent with this and with the $v^4$ baryonic Tully-Fisher relation for galactic rotation velocities. Vanishing of centripetal acceleration outside a halo boundary is a unique implication of the theory.

Iterative removal of redshift space distortions from galaxy clustering

Observations of galaxy clustering are made in redshift space, which results in distortions to the underlying isotropic distribution of galaxies. These redshift-space distortions (RSD) not only degrade important features of the matter density field, such as the baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) peaks, but also pose challenges for the theoretical modelling of observational probes. Here we introduce an iterative nonlinear reconstruction algorithm to remove RSD effects from galaxy clustering measurements, and assess its performance by using mock galaxy catalogues. The new method is found to be able to recover the real-space galaxy correlation function with an accuracy of $\sim1\%$, and restore the quadrupole accurately to $0$, on scales $s\gtrsim20\Mpch$. It also leads to an improvement in the reconstruction of the initial density field, which could help to accurately locate the BAO peaks. An `internal calibration' scheme is proposed to determine the values of cosmological parameters as a part of the reconstruction process, and possibilities to break parameter degeneracies are discussed. RSD reconstruction can offer a potential way to simultaneously extract the cosmological parameters, initial density field, real-space galaxy positions and large-scale peculiar velocity field (of the real Universe), making it an alternative to standard perturbative approaches in galaxy clustering analysis, bypassing the need for RSD modelling.

Burst properties of the most recurring transient magnetar SGR J1935+2154

We present timing and time-integrated spectral analysis of 127 bursts from SGR J1935+2154. These bursts were observed with the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope and the Burst Alert Telescope on the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory during the source's four active episodes from 2014 to 2016. This activation frequency makes SGR J1935+2154 the most burst prolific transient magnetar. We find the average duration of all the detected bursts to be much shorter than the typical, anticipated value. We fit the burst time-integrated spectra with two black-body functions, a Comptonized model and three other simpler models. Bursts from SGR J1935+2154 exhibit similar spectral properties to other magnetars, with the exception of the power law index from the Comptonized model, which correlates with burst fluence. We find that the durations and both black-body temperatures of the bursts have significantly evolved across the four active episodes. We also find that the burst time history exhibits two trends, which are strongly correlated with the decay of the persistent emission in each outburst.

The 'hidden' companion in LB-1 unveiled by spectral disentangling

The intriguing binary LS V +22 25 (LB-1) has drawn much attention following claims of it being a single-lined spectroscopic binary with a 79-day orbit comprising a B-type star and a ~70 Msun black hole. Recent analyses have implied that the visible primary star is a stripped He-rich star. However, the nature of the secondary, which was proposed to be a black hole, a neutron star, or a main sequence star, remains unknown. Based on 26 newly acquired spectroscopic observations, we perform an orbital analysis and spectral disentangling of LB-1 to elucidate the nature of the system. Our analysis reveals that LB-1 contains two components of comparable brightness in the optical. The narrow-lined primary, which we estimate to contribute ~55% in the optical, has spectral properties that suggest that it is a stripped star: it has a small spectroscopic mass (~1 Msun) for a B-type star and it is He- and N-rich. The "hidden" secondary, which contributes about 45% of the optical flux, is a rapidly rotating (vsini ~ 300 km/s) B3 V star with a decretion disk -- a Be star. Hence, LB-1 does not contain a compact object. Instead, it is a rare Be binary system consisting of a stripped star (the former mass donor) and a Be star rotating at near its critical velocity (the former mass accretor). This system is a clear example that binary interactions play a decisive role in the production of rapid stellar rotators and Be stars.

Deep-Learning Continuous Gravitational Waves: Multiple detectors and realistic noise

The sensitivity of wide-parameter-space searches for continuous gravitational waves is limited by computational cost. Recently it was shown that Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) can perform all-sky searches directly on (single-detector) strain data, potentially providing a low-computing-cost search method that could lead to a better overall sensitivity. Here we expand on this study in two respects: (i) using (simulated) strain data from two detectors simultaneously, and (ii) training for directed (i.e.\ single sky-position) searches in addition to all-sky searches. For a data timespan of $T = 10^5\, s$, the all-sky two-detector DNN is about $7\%$ less sensitive (in amplitude $h_0$) at low frequency ($f=20\,Hz$), and about $51\,\%$ less sensitive at high frequency ($f=1000\,Hz$) compared to fully-coherent matched-filtering (using WEAVE). In the directed case the sensitivity gap compared to matched-filtering ranges from about $7-14\%$ at $f=20\,Hz$ to about $37-49\%$ at $f=1500\,Hz$. Furthermore we assess the DNN's ability to generalize in signal frequency, spindown and sky-position, and we test its robustness to realistic data conditions, namely gaps in the data and using real LIGO detector noise. We find that the DNN performance is not adversely affected by gaps in the test data or by using a relatively undisturbed band of LIGO detector data instead of Gaussian noise. However, when using a more disturbed LIGO band for the tests, the DNN's detection performance is substantially degraded due to the increase in false alarms, as expected.

New Constraints on the Origin of Surface Brightness Profile Breaks of Disk Galaxies from MaNGA

In an effort to probe the origin of surface brightness profile (SBP) breaks widely observed in nearby disk galaxies, we carry out a comparative study of stellar population profiles of 635 disk galaxies selected from the MaNGA spectroscopic survey. We classify our galaxies into single exponential (TI), down-bending (TII) and up-bending (TIII) SBP types, and derive their spin parameters and radial profiles of age/metallicity-sensitive spectral features. Most TII (TIII) galaxies have down-bending (up-bending) star formation rate (SFR) radial profiles, implying that abrupt radial changes of SFR intensities contribute to the formation of both TII and TIII breaks. Nevertheless, a comparison between our galaxies and simulations suggests that stellar migration plays a significant role in weakening down-bending $\Sigma_{\star}$ profile breaks. While there is a correlation between the break strengths of SBPs and age/metallicity-sensitive spectral features for TII galaxies, no such correlation is found for TIII galaxies, indicating that stellar migration may not play a major role in shaping TIII breaks, as is evidenced by a good correspondence between break strengths of $\Sigma_{\star}$ and surface brightness profiles of TIII galaxies. We do not find evidence for galaxy spin being a relevant parameter for forming different SBP types, nor do we find significant differences between the asymmetries of galaxies with different SBP types, suggesting that environmental disturbances or satellite accretion in the recent past do not significantly influence the break formation. By dividing our sample into early and late morphological types, we find that galaxies with different SBP types follow nearly the same tight stellar mass-$R_{25}$ relation, which makes the hypothesis that stellar migration alone can transform SBP types from TII to TI and then to TIII highly unlikely.

Axion and neutrino red-giant bounds updated with geometric distance determinations

The brightness of the tip of the red-giant branch (TRGB) allows one to constrain novel energy losses that would lead to a larger core mass at helium ignition and thus to a brighter TRGB than predicted by standard stellar models. The required absolute TRGB calibration depends on reliable distances to the observed ensembles of stars. Motivated by its role as a rung in the cosmic distance ladder, the TRGB was recently recalibrated with geometric distance determinations of the Magellanic Clouds based on detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs). Moreover, we revise previous TRGB calibrations of the galactic globular clusters M5 and $\omega$ Centauri with recent kinematical distance determinations based on Gaia DR2 data. All of these TRGB calibrations have similar uncertainties and they agree with each other and with recent dedicated stellar models. We thus find an updated constraint on the axion-electron coupling of $g_{ae}<1.6\times10^{-13}$ (95% CL) and $\mu_\nu<1.5\times10^{-12}\mu_{\rm B}$ (95% CL) on a possible neutrino dipole moment. The reduced observational errors imply that stellar evolution theory and bolometric corrections begin to dominate the overall uncertainties.

Bar Classification based on the Potential Map

We introduce a new approach to classify barred galaxies that utilizes the transverse-to-radial force ratio map (ratio map, hereafter) in a different manner from previous studies. When we display the ratio map in polar coordinates, barred galaxies appear as four aligned, horizontal thick slabs. This characteristic feature enables us to successfully classify barred and nonbarred galaxies with an accuracy of 87%. It yields the bar fraction of 53%, including both SBs and SABs, when applied to 884 nearby (z < 0.01) spiral galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey/DR7. It also provides the bar strength and length measurements, in particular, separated from the spiral arms. They show good correlations with the measures estimated from ellipse fitting and Fourier analysis. However, we find different tendencies of the bar strength measurements in terms of the Hubble sequence: as the Hubble sequence increases (towards late-type), the bar strength and bar ellipticity increase, whereas the dipole Fourier amplitude decreases. We show that the bulge affects the estimation of the bar strength differently, depending on the classification methods. The bulge causes the bar length to be overestimated in all three methods. Meanwhile, we find that barred galaxies show two types of radial profiles of the angle-averaged force ratio: one has a maximum peak (type M) and the other a plateau (type P). Comparison with numerical simulations suggests that type M bars are more mature than type P bars in terms of evolutionary stage.

Constraining Primordial Black Hole Fraction at the Galactic Centre using radio observational data

Recent gamma-ray and cosmic-ray observations have put strong constraints on the amount of primordial black holes (PBHs) in our universe. In this article, we use the archival radio data of the inner Galactic Centre to constrain the PBH to dark matter ratio for three different PBH mass distributions including monochromatic, log-normal and power-law. We show that the amount of PBHs only constitutes a very minor component of dark matter at the Galactic Centre for a large parameter space.

Electric Currents through J-shaped and Non-J-shaped Flare Ribbons

Recently solar flares exhibiting a double J-shaped ribbons in the lower solar atmosphere have been paid increasing attention in the context of extending the two-dimensional standard flare model to three dimensions, as motivated by the spatial correlation between photospheric current channels and flare ribbons. Here we study the electric currents through the photospheric area swept by flare ribbons (termed synthesized ribbon area or SRA), with a sample of 71 two-ribbon flares, of which 36 are J-shaped. Electric currents flowing through one ribbon are highly correlated with those through the other, therefore belonging to the same current system. The non-neutrality factor of this current system is independent of the flare magnitude, implying that both direct and return currents participate in flares. J-shaped flares are distinct from non-J-shaped flares in the following aspects: 1) Electric current densities within J-shaped SRA are significantly smaller than those within non-J-shaped SRA, but J-shaped SRA and its associated magnetic flux are also significantly larger. 2) Electric currents through SRA are positively correlated with the flare magnitude, but J-shaped flares show stronger correlation than non-J-shaped flares. 3) The majority (75\%) of J-shaped flares are eruptive, while the majority (86\%) of non-J-shaped flares are confined; accordingly, hosting active regions of J-shaped flares are more likely to be sigmoidal than non-J-shaped flares. Thus, J-shaped flares constitute a distinct subset of two-ribbon flares, probably the representative of eruptive ones. Further, we found that combining SRA and its associated magnetic flux has the potential to differentiate eruptive from confined flares.

Model independent measurement on the cosmic curvature

Inflation predicts that the Universe is spatially flat. The Planck 2018 measurements of the cosmic microwave background anisotropy favour a spatially closed universe at more than 2$\sigma$ confidence level. We use model independent methods to study the issue of cosmic curvature. The method reconstructs the Hubble parameter $H(z)$ from cosmic chronometers data with the Gaussian process method. The distance modulus is then calculated with the reconstructed function $H(z)$ and fitted by type Ia supernovae data. Combining the cosmic chronometers and type Ia supernovae data, we obtain $\Omega_{k0}h^2=0.102\pm 0.066$ which shows a spatially open universe at more than 1$\sigma$ confidence level. By adding the redshift space distortions data to the type Ia supernovae data, we obtain $\Omega_{k0}h^2=0.117^{+0.058}_{-0.045}$ and no interesting deviation from $\Lambda$CDM model is found. The almost $2\sigma$ evidence of a spatially open universe is independent of cosmological model and gravitational theory.

Self-scattering in protoplanetary disks with dust settling

Scattering of re-emitted flux is considered to be at least partially responsible for the observed polarisation in the (sub-)millimetre wavelength range of several protoplanetary disks. Although the degree of polarisation produced by scattering is highly dependent on the dust model, early studies investigating this mechanism relied on the assumption of single grain sizes and simple density distribution of the dust. However, in the dense inner regions where this mechanism is usually most efficient, the existence of dust grains with sizes ranging from nanometres to millimetres has been confirmed. Additionally, the presence of gas forces larger grains to migrate vertically towards the disk midplane, introducing a dust segregation in the vertical direction. Using polarisation radiative transfer simulations, we analyse the dependence of the resulting scattered light polarisation at 350 $\mu$m, 850 $\mu$m, 1.3 mm, and 2 mm on various parameters describing protoplanetary disks, including the effect of dust grain settling. We find that the different disk parameters change the degree of polarisation mostly by affecting the anisotropy of the radiation field, the optical depth, or both. It is therefore very challenging to deduce certain disk parameter values directly from polarisation measurements alone. However, assuming a high dust albedo, it is possible to trace the transition from optically thick to optically thin disk regions. The degree of polarisation in most of the considered disk configurations is lower than what is found observationally, implying the necessity to revisit models that describe the dust properties and disk structure.
